Can we ever eat these again?

Hey everyone.... during my pre-surgery research I learned that we either can't or shouldn't ever have bread (unless it's toasted) or Pasta again after the surgery. But then I read about people who have gotten past that restriction. So I'm just wondering, for those of you who have moved on to regular food.... can we ever have a hamburger again? A hotdog? Spaghetti? Lasagna?

Obviously these aren't foods we'd eat regularly (if we're eating healthy) but.... ever? What do ya say?

I can eat bread, Pasta, spaghetti, and lasagna. I just don't eat a lot of any of those things. I can eat hot dogs and hamburgers without the Buns easily, but have a little bit of trouble with buns and the meat together. If I go slow, take very small bites and chew well, I don't usually have problems with anything.

I too can eat all of the above - but I haven't had a hamburger & bun too much bread - would be full too fast and not enough nutrition

I have had maybe 3 sandwiches made with lite bread - since I have been banded - but anything on a thick roll would be out of the question.

No biggie for me as I have never been a big hamburger eater - now as to eating a submarine - those I would eat - but no more - it would be way too much bread - but heck - I don't miss it - food doesn't have the same pull as it use to - I don't want to waste my calories on foods that don't provide nurtrition...

Hi Nance!

Yep Lisa's right - I mean it's still really touch and go with individual people. I can tolerate almost anything - BUT - given that I eat it slow enough, in small enough pieces, and chew well enough.

Sometimes, crunchy toast will get stuck, or lasagna that's not mushy (al dente is too undercooked for me) or things that SHOULD go down will surprise me and get stuck. Usually the reason is I didn't chew well enough.

A common side effect of having the band and eating slow is that you tend to run at the mouth a lot - meaning when you're eating with other people, you start talking and blabbing and getting all social :rolleyes2: You are waiting for the food to pass before taking another bite and soon, you've had 2 glorious pea sized bites of the most delicious cheeseburger with bacon (and maybe a millimeter of that delicious bun) and you are now utterly turned off, full, and uninterested.

I wish I'd tallied up all the meals I wasted over the past few years. I blew a lot of money just for a little taste of something. They never microwave right.

As far as Pasta, I find I can really only tolerate angel hair. Aaaand Stouffer's Mac and cheese. Major gateway food. Mmmm.

I wondered if this would be the case when I get my band. I wondered if my mindset would begin to change. I love healthy foods. My problem has been too much unhealthy available. I have already begun to try to change my eating habits and avoid "eating temptations". I have been confronting "favorite" bad foods and really evaluating why I eat them. I have found that a lot of them are just because they are there. It is not because they are good or good for me. It has been helping me make some better food choices.

IMHO - 75% of the work to lose the weight is up to you - your food choices and exercise - the band does the other 25% in controling your portions. It makes a hard job a little easier

My problems with food was mostly the Portion Control issues - I would come home cook dinner (usually high fat) and eat all night - 2 tacos- then a little later a couple more - then before bed a couple more - every few months I would go on a sweets binge for the weekend.

But now I read lables - I look at how many caloires are in those 2 Cookies and what size the Cookies are then decide if I want to eat 2 cookies for 200 calories that won't stick with me for long - or would I rather have a meal for those calories - 99% of the time I will eat the meal instead of wasting it on junk

Ya if you do the head work - your outlook on food will be diff

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

        I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

        Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
