My doc prescribed Optifast, cost about $4.00 per shake, I did it 2 weeks pre op and one week post op (after a couple of days of clear fluids).

Trust me, I was spending way more than $12 per day preband. That is how I got to 224 pounds.

I know I'm not a male, and this is the Men's Room, but I felt the need to respond.

I had a pre-op and post-op diet that was $249. I was annoyed as heck, but it was for four weeks. I figured I spent more than that on food in a month.

But that didn't make it any easier, I was pissed as heck I had to order their diet. My surgeon's office MADE me order it from them, my surgery would not be scheduled until the called the company and confirmed I had purchased the diet! Grrrrrrrr!

4 weeks of a high Protein, low carbohydrate diet. (one week to go). Then two weeks of liquid diet, then my date, May 28th. I do have to say, this Atkins like diet is doing me very well, I lost 20lbs in the 3 weeks. But there is no way, I could ever stay on Atkins for life. I feel if I eat any more eggs, I'm going to wake up speaking chicken language. Peep, Peep, Peep!!

I don't think I've ever felt as well in my life as I did when I was on Atkins.< /p>

At my place, they recommend SlimFast Optima, the low carb one, which is about $2 a can around NYC, particularly if you buy in six-packs. They recommended 6 cans a day, so, that's $84 a week. I did it for two weeks pre-op (to shrink that fatty liver right down, which makes surgery easier), and then for about a week and a bit post-op. I supplemented with premade clear Isopure Zero Carb drinks (20 ounces, 40 grams of protein).

My surgeon in Austin had the pre-op appointment as a group setting. Some people got to be on the Atkins Diet for two weeks and I was put on a liquid diet. Hell, I was hoping for the Atkins Diet, I love beef and cheeses.

What gives!!!!

10 weeks of pre-op nutritional counselling, and restricted to 1200-2000 cals/day, plus exercise (currently at 45min/day). A couple Protein shakes, some lean cuisines, and some 5 servings of veg. Keeps me pretty full, actually, and I estimate I *had* been doing a good 3400+ before.

Lost about 30# in the past 5 weeks, though 8# of that was .. not fat.

3 more weeks to go, though the loss is getting a little slower than it was earlier.

Funny, I had no pre-op diet whatsoever, except to fast the day before the surgery. I was 5' 9" and 276 lbs. He never said anything, and I never asked. I have no idea what the criteria is. One day, I guess I'll have to ask.

Part of the purpose of a pre-op diet would be to reduce the size of the liver so that it's easier to work around your stomach. I suppose if your liver were known to be not-over-large, you *could* skip a pre-op diet.

The other purpose would be to start getting you into the sort of habits you'll need post-op in order to succeed. Even if you're not prescribed such a diet, I'd probably recommend one in principle.

For what it's worth, calculate how much money you *won't* be spending on other foods. I estimate my pre-op diet is saving us about $600/mo. Which is good, considering we have home improvement projects in addition to the Keith improvement project.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
