Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone I was wondeirng if anyone was from Ames IA I'm going to Dr. Glascock for my surgery so I get to drive Ames to Waterloo for everything but I know it will all be worth it in the end. There is a Bariatric department at Mary Greenley Medical Center (the Ames hospital) But I heard good things about Dr. Glascock. On month Three of the supervised diet plan hoping that I didn't gain anything this month god that would be horrible if it happened again! but it's getting closer to summer and I'm always more active in the warm weather so theirs hope. :smile2:

I'm in Ames but just starting the process with my seminar next month. I'm looking at DM. Didn't realize Ames had a bariatric surgeon? Best of luck to you and please keep me updated on how you are doing, etc.

Ames does have a bariatric surgeon but he only does open surgery and only RNY. Not what I wanted. Dr. Glascock is in Cedar Falls. I just got back from there this morning (we live just south of Ames) and met with him. My surgery is scheduled for Tuesday Sept 2 at 9:45am. I was happy to hear he had the rest of today off, and wasn't on call this weekend. He will be happy and fired up on Tuesday!!!

It has been quite an adventure, I went to his seminar in October or November in 2006! Had to get the 6 month supervised diet in. I highly recommend working with the folks up at Mary Greeley in Ames. Your doctor has to refer you to the dieticians, but Sara there really helped me not only lose weight but understand that its a lifetime change, and that I can really do it. I have lost 40# with her couseling. Then after the insurance approved the surgery, the real fun began! Cardiac testing, sleep studies, upper GI, lung x ray, stress test, lots more. So I at least know I am in good shape to start this thing!

I have never had a real doubt that I wanted to do this, and am thrilled its so close. Friends and family are happy for me but it took me a LONG time to tell anyone, since it was taking so long to get the insurance coverage. I waited till nearly all the tests were done and I was close to having a surgery date before I told even my closest friends, then they were a bit mad I hadn't told them before!

Hi Paula -

After seeing xgrl's post above I did some research and saw that Ames had a surgeon doing the full gastric bypass (not what I want).

You must be so excited about your surgery next week! I've heard great things about Dr. Glascock. (sp?) Thanks for talking about the process you went through and letting me know you worked with a dietician here in Ames. I am going to the seminar in DM next month at Iowa Health and am anxious to learn more and see if I can get the process rolling.

Part of me worries that I don't be approved by the doc (I already know my insurance covers it) because I gain and lose weight - then I think DUH - we wouldn't need the surgery if we had no problem losing it and keeping it off!! I'm so ready to make the commitment - too many people my age (who appear to be healthier) are dying of heart attacks and it scares me. But still part of me worries "will I fail at this too?" Maybe that's normal - I'm sure we feel we have all tried every diet known to mankind. I just keep reminding myself that the band is there to help me eat less and if I listen to it I'll do fine.

Thanks for letting me ramble! Best of luck on Tuesday and please keep us updated on how your surgery goes. You'll be in my thoughts!!

Hey Ladies!

I didn't know it was just gastric bypass at Ames... after I tried working with a dr at Mcfarland that wasn't at all supportive of my decision and didn't wanna help me with my 6th month diet I called the surgery center at Mary Greenly and asked if they knew of any doctors that would be supportive and help me with my 6th month diet I found it in a dr at the Student Health Center. Anyways long story short I'm not waiting on approval after my 2nd submission because insurance company apparently needs a new pair of glasses  I hope your surgery went well today keep us up to date that is so exciting! I've heard nothing but Raves for Dr. Glascock, and simply can't wait to have the surgery done. I don't blame you for not telling anyone I told a select few people but apparently I told one WRONG person and she has a really freaking big mouth but used the high school words "don't tell anyone but..." and thinks it's okay to say anything after that  needless to say she's not getting any updates! I hear you about people having heart attacks at a very young age some of my parents friend that I thought were way to young to have heart attacks that are pretty healthy people are having them it's just really strange. makes me wonder if there isn't a factor that I'm not seeing but obviously I haven't figured it out yet.... I called my ins. company today and so far they are still "working" on my case....cross your fingers for me ladies! I hope your surgery went off without a hitch and you are recovering well. bambam good luck with your journey keep me up to date!

~Now I have to go Read..... College is so much fun

Night Ladies,

Xgrl

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
