Can you lose saline?

Recommended Posts

I am a relatively new bandster. I was banded on 1/31/08.

My first fill was 2/4 - I was told 3cc.s

2nd fill 2/24 - they withdrew the saline and said I had 2ccs - but I remember them telling me they put in 3. Is measuring by withdrawing saline inaccurate?. The doctor added 2ccs. So I should have 5cc but he

thinks 4ccs. Can u lose saline? Also I assumed I had a 10cc band but I asked the doctor and he said 12cc. I know I have an Allergan band but I never heard of 12ccs. I thought it was 10 or 14cc capacity? Can anyone explain it. Will it take me longer to feel restriction if I have a larger capacity band?

Well, if he pulled out 2 and added 2, then you have 4 ccs. I've lost saline before, too. Now that you know you have 4 ccs, at your next fill have them pull out what's in there to check.

If you're consistently losing saline you might have a leak.

Mine only happened the one time. At this last check, the expected amount was in there.

If you have a leak there are 3 possibilities, I think. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong:

1) It's a leak in the tubing that leads from the band to the port: you replace the tubing.

2) It's a leak in the band: you replace the band (ugh)

3) You leave it be and just don't have restriction. With a slow enough leak I suppose you can just get refilled from time to time. It's just sterile saline, so there's no harm to your body. This is obviously not ideal, but not everyone can afford to have surgery again, especially if they are self-pay.

The port is self-sealing, so there shouldn't be a leak in the port itself.

I have just gone for my 4th fill yesturday, 5th April. The first fill that I had was 7.3, this was done under xrey, the second was done in a clinic and was 1.7 then there was the 3rd fill also in a clinic, this was 1cc bringing the total to 100cc in a 14cc band. However I began to think something was wrong becuase I have not had mach restriction and none with the last 2 fills so I paid for another xray fill and when he asparated all the sealine in the band there was only 7.3 in there. So did the other 2 fills miss the port or have I got a lead? is seams to much of a coincidence to be a leak I think and will be asking some hard questions come tomorrows office hours....

Well theres another possibility, they could missed the mark.

good luck from England

kind regards Beverly

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
