Newbie has question about carbs and sugar

Recommended Posts

I am a little confused. I know we are supposed to eat a high Protein diet, and eat our protein in a meal first. My question is, are we as sensitive to sugar as gastric by-pass patients are? For example, I was shopping for yogurt today, and there was a pretty big difference in the sugar grams and carb grams between different brands. Should I be going for the lowest calories, or the lowest sugar count? Sometimes the lowest sugar count is not the lowest in calories. Do bandsters get sick when eating sugar like bypass patients?

I am only 2 weeks post-op, so I am still learning! Thanks!:wink2:

No, sugar does not affect us the way it does GBS patients. I would be going for lowest calories myself but everyone has different goals and ideas of how to get there. Check your doctor's list of foods too.

We don't dump from sugar like bypassers do. I personally don't use any sugar products simply because carbs make me retain Water. I get all the carbs I need from my veggies without adding any sugar products. Every surgeon wants us doing different things post op even though the overall goal is the same. My surgeon suggest Protein, water and exercise as his most successful bandsters. I always eat protein at every meal and I eat it first then I eat my veggies. I do at least 30 mins if not more of brisk walking plus I do weight training and I drink 6 litres or more of water daily(that's almost 2 US gallons).

Hi,

I've been banded since 07/24/2007 and have lost 61lbs. I drink all the time but I always wait 1 hour after I eat before I start drinking again. I've never had a fill yet so I'm thinking maybe the Water is helping me feel full?

I just buy the yogurt I like, which is full fat. I have found calories take care of themselves for me with a lapband and lots of running.

As mentioned, we don't feel the "dumping syndrome" that gastric bypass patients do, however my surgeon warned me that eating foods high in sugary would make me feel more hungry and I would eat more and possibly stretch my stomach pouch. I do the best when I keep my carbs/sugars to a minimum. The lower the better in fact. It's amazing how addictive sugar can be! When I go without sugary foods I don't miss them, but as soon as I start eating sugary foods I can't stop!

I am just 2 days post-op and I am having a problem. Whenever I try to eat anything other than Water, broth or juice, (ie: sugar free Jello, low fat lite yogurt), my face turns bright red and gets hot and I get palpitations. What's up with that? Is this normal? Is it because my surgeon also repaired a hiatal hernia during the procedure? I was thinking that it might be related to the dump syndrome thing, but reading here it seems like it's not that. Am I trying the jello and yogurt too soon? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I did call my doctor and he said it is from the hiatal hernia repair. It is causing a vaso-vagal response because of the swelling. He said to give it 4 or 5 more days without the Jello or yogurt and try it again.

ebonie, you've been banded since last July and never had a fill yet????? Did you get immediate restriction from the band, or is it a monetary issue??

I guess I didn't realize you could have the band put in and then not get an occasional fill as it loosens as you lose weight. (going for my 3rd fill next Friday).

Just curious......

Make some people don't require fills right away - there are people who are at my doc's office who have been banded 6 months before they ever got a fill - for some - just the band being in place is enought restrictions - you will find out the longer you are here that every one is so dfferent as to what their doc's say and how many fills they have ...

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
