Congrats! I'm going g in on the 20th. How was your pain after surgery? Sleeve or bypass? Is the liquid ok to swallow?

Hi Liz! I had a sleeve on 10/9/23. I have had two challenges with swallowing: (1) my soft palate (back of the roof of my mouth) was destroyed by the intubation and it really hurt to swallow! It has just started improving today; (2) I sometimes forget and take a BIG swallow instead of a sip and my body immediately reminds me that was too much! I'll get like 5-10 seconds of what feels kind of like mild heartburn until the liquid works it way through. It's not too painful, but it's definitely uncomfortable.

Otherwise, the liquid diet is pretty miserable. But it's only for 3 weeks. I figure I can do anything for 3 weeks, considering the benefit on the other end!

Hi I am on day 5 and I have been wanting to just eat something I am not hungry at all but it’s so hard to drink around the clock to make sure to get everything in. I know it’s all worth it at the end and I am so grateful but it’s hard mentally and I have just wanted to scream so you’re not alone! People who I know who have had this always say these two weeks are the hardest! I know that there is a light and I will be able to eat normal food in no time! I started at 217 and I am 5’3 I am not 187.6 I was able to try on some clothes I had that have not fitted me in a while and that was motivating me to keep my head up it’s working! You can do this! It’s hard but it will be worth it in the end. Stay strong! Not everyone has the privilege of being in the looser club like us!! Good luck on your journey!

Preaching to the choir Momo! I'm 8 days postop and I miss real food so badly! My Protein goal is 90g and honestly I have not met it yet -- I've gotten as high as 81 so far. In order to get to 90 almost every liquid I consume has to be high protein and that is rough. Plus my doc has me on Stage 1 all liquids for THREE WEEKS! AGH! I might die! But I'm like you, it's just temporary. It will be worth it. GREAT TIP re: trying on clothes that don't fit! I love that suggestion! Gonna go do it now!

Kendrajones I hope that suggestion helped! How are you feeling with healing I am still sore especially in one incision. WOW 90g of Protein is a lot! I am suppose to do 1 to 1 1/2 of a Protein Shake a day and at least 64oz of Water which is hard. Are you getting any heart burn I get it at the end of the day when my stomach is full from drinking all day and it’s the worse. I don’t get how we all have the same surgery same thing done but the requirements for eveyone is so different! Good luck on your journey!

Have you tried something like the unflavored protein from GENEPRO? You can add it to anything you are eating or drinking and it will boost your protein count, so you can alternate between protein and non-protein drinks. 3 weeks of liquids post op?? And I thought my 3 week pre-op diet sucked. LOL Good luck to you, I will have 2 weeks of liquids which is pretty standard for the more progressive bariatric practices. I bet that extra week of liquids will help your suture lines heal suuuper strong!! Are they letting you have sugar free popsicles and sugar free Jello? That helps break up the all liquids a bit.

Hi everyone! My surgery date was October 6... So I'm 7 days pre-op, full liquids, 11 pounds down! Eager to get to the puree part!

Any good Protein Soup recommendations? I really like broccoli cheddar.

Don't rush it! I start the soft diet tomorrow. Remember to go slow with small bites. I swallowed some air when eating today and spent the next 20 minutes in pain and vomiting. Lesson learned.

Good luck with your journey.

It gets better. I'm on day 6, tomorrow day 7 of a two-week pre-op full liquid diet. I was feeling pretty good by day 4 myself and honestly the last two days I have not been hungry at all.

today is day 4 post op vgs and I’m not sure if the pain I’m having is hunger pangs or pain pain- it’s all feeling the same. I didn’t feel hungry at all during the preop diet. I’ve got to try and get more of my Protein Shakes down - I finally showered yesterday but was so tired afterwards that I went back to bed and slept 5 more hours. Needless to say I did not hit my Protein or Water goals 🤣.

I hear this! I'm 11 days post-op and yesterday was really the first day when I made it through the whole day without needing to take at least one nap! I've only hit my Protein goal once, but I'm aiming for it again today! Keep going!

Hi

I’m new this forum and this is my first post

i had my gastric sleeve done on 17th October and been fairly ok ever since - few moments of regrets but this is something I needed to do more than wanting to do

Pre surgery I was constantly obsessed with food - I would plan in advance that if I’m going here il eat this and on this day il eat this and so on ..obsessed with takeaways and even had a tiktok channel with all the nice food places I go to etc ..food was my life..I’m 36 and this lifestyle made me diabetic and I still think I’m young and shouldn’t be diabetic. Iv seen peoples lives change for the worse since becoming diabetic and this worried me…this is why I say I did this because I needed to rather than wanting to

i know 4-5 people who have done the surgery and iv seen what they eat after a year..their appetite has gone up more now and rather than losing weight are maintaining it by the food they are eating ..the food they are eating now gives me motivation which is unfortunate that I know this isn’t forever

I am proud of you hanging in there. It will be 19 days since surgery. Had a couple of rough days. Learning the difference between physical and mental hunger. Got to find different things to do. Not focusing on 2hat to eat next. Stay strong.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
