Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have an surgery date for Gastric Bypass on Aug 16th, and I have couple questions:

Anyone have regrets?

Were you scared before surgery?

I haven’t had any regrets. 5-7 days after surgery is when you think “what the hell did I just do?” But then you are able to drink a little more Protein each day & then you progress though all the food stages & you slowly start to feel better as the weight starts falling off. Then you feel amazing & wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!

I think most of us were scared before surgery. It’s a natural response.

There was definitely a moment or 2 where I second guessed my decision, but now that I'm on regular food and healed, absolutely no regrets. Those first few weeks are challenging. And be prepared for the mental aspect of all this. For me, that's been the hardest part; even at 10 weeks out. The cravings, food addiction, and stalls all have taken their turn. Therapy is so helpful for this.
I was nervous before surgery more for the unknows and how my life was going to change, but I was not scared. I think that part is pretty individual based on many individual factors.

Before I had surgery my life was miserable. Couldnt walk far at all. Looking after myself was such a big drain. I had come to the end of myself and didnt care if the very worst happened cos I was already living it. You know how hard it is.

Booking in for the surgery gave me something that I had not had for a very long time ........... Hope. Closer to the operation I was scared but also excited.

I had the gastric bypass May last year. Since then I lost 53kg or 116 pounds. I know I still have a way to go but I am feeling so much better in my own skin. I am more mobile and fitter than I have been in years. I am off all diabetic medications including insulin. I am also off my blood pressure and gerd medications too.

I have not had any complications. No regrets.

Thank you all for your responses. I have been lurking in this forum for past 6 weeks, and have read most of your stories here and I appreciate it when people share, so I will do the same with my progress. Thank you all again.

No regrets. I am doing things now, I couldn't do for years. I told someone the other day, I finally feel free. Because before I was living in my own prison. WLS held the key. I am only 3 months out and still have a ways to go but even the 60 pounds off has made a dramatic difference in how I feel and move and breathe.

Don't fear the surgery. Fear doing nothing. I was nervous but not fearful. Good luck @Mike.J.Y You'll do just fine :)

Hi @Mike.J.Y Mine is scheduled August 15. I’m not scared of surgery myself, I’ve had several for other stuff. I’m mostly scared of looking old and gaunt, lol. But would be happy to be surgery buddy if you are interested!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
