Shan0 got a reaction from BeanitoDiego in August 2023 Surgery Buddies!Glad you’re losing well! I’ve had a bit of sugar too. But I’m afraid of dumping so only little bits. I’m not sure if I should be concerned about that or not.
-
Shan0 got a reaction from BeanitoDiego in August 2023 Surgery Buddies!Hit goal a few days ago, but now I’m worried about the “bounce” that people talk about, so I’m going to keep on for another 20lb. And I actually wonder if I’ll ever be able to STOP losing weight, since I eat so few calories. Still in the 700 range most days. How is everyone else doing?
-
Shan0 got a reaction from BeanitoDiego in August 2023 Surgery Buddies!I’m doing great! Lost 48 lbs so far, feel fantastic. I mostly eat protein, but I have been sampling with other things and find that some things don’t agree with me, like bacon for sure, and oatmeal. But otherwise most food is fine and I am so happy about it. I never did this for weight loss but it’s been incredible anyway, and I am really enjoying new clothes.
How are you doing?
-
Shan0 got a reaction from BeanitoDiego in August 2023 Surgery Buddies!I’ve gone from 233 to 195, 38 pounds. I appreciate having visuble collarbones again. Weight is just melting off.
I still have a protein shake every day, and then I’m eating almost entirely protein otherwise, but occasionally sneak in a little bit of something else, like today I had two tacos and I ate the corn tortillas.
I haven’t had any particular problems except for getting in enough water. I am really not doing well with that. I have also started drinking coffee coffee and that helps to get more liquids in.
I always biked a few miles every day and I’m continuing that but I start Pilates next month as well.

Shan0 reacted to BeanitoDiego in August 2023 Surgery Buddies!OMG, some of the food dreams I have had right before and since my surgery have been crazy- me eating lots of pasta and pizza and chocolate and oh gosh, candy and snack bars. Grabbing handfuls of the things and stuffing them in my mouth ?
-
Shan0 got a reaction from BeanitoDiego in August 2023 Surgery Buddies! This is so true! I’m 2 weeks out as of tomorrow, and everyday there are huge strides.
One thing: dumping syndrome is no joke, so be sure to do what your medical team is telling you to do and don’t do something stupid like have a half-cup of Thai soup broth with coconut milk in it—like this idiot did. (Me?)
You are going to be just fine, @Danielle07!

Shan0 got a reaction from BeanitoDiego in August 2023 Surgery Buddies!Anyone having food dreams? I had my bypass on the 15th and I’m not hungry and don’t really care about food. But today I had this funny dream about my husband bringing me nachos and we both just forgot all the limitations. I ate some and then I freaked out because I thought it was going to cause some sort of catastrophe. I woke up laughing about it.

Shan0 got a reaction from Justkeepslimming in August 2023 Surgery Buddies! Also 8/15 but no hunger at all. Have to force myself to drink my stupid shakes.

Shan0 reacted to PennyinAL in August 2023 Surgery Buddies!I am so sorry you are hurting so much. I too, had a very rough time of the pain. Like you, I've got major back issues (herniated discs neck, mid and low back) and have had several surgeries in the past and this lapband removal/bypass replacement hurt like hell. I wasn't trying to scare anyone off, I even said I would do it again but just really didn't realize how much it would hurt because compared to the prior LapBand, it was 10x worse in pain. I take Norco (hydrocodone & acet) and Lyrica and that Dilautin (sp?) was awful, it only worked for an hour at most but once I was able to get back on my Norco, it was bearable.
And I'm not a medical professional, but I am a bit of an observer of human behaviors and the human condition and at my age, I've seen a lot of things and have learned that it is best to try to prepare yourself for whatever life may want to throw at you because bad stuff never seems to happen at a good time :). Thus, I made sure I had my own pain meds because just when a bitchy old hag of a nurse wants to threaten to hold them over your head, you don't have to put up with crap, Or more likely, when staff is short and you are forgotten by the folks who are supposed to be caring for you in the middle of the night, etc. I'm not saying you need to ignore dr orders, I merely said it never hurts to be prepared for people to not do what they're supposed to do for you! Be prepared to take care of yourself.
I remembered my husband having spinal fusion surgery 10+ years ago, malfunction at hospital pharmacy so he was hours without meds. I watched that man screaming in pain and literally could do nothing to help him! The nurses had the audacity to try to come close his door (so they didn't have to hear him in agony) which made my head explode, I pretty much told them that IF I HAD TO HEAR HIM, THEY HAD TO HEAR HIM TOO AND IF THEY DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR HIM TO GET HIM THE HELLO OUT OF PAIN! Going through these life experiences changes your perception, tends to make you learn what you don't want to go through again.
SoutheastP-Again, not trying to scare you. You may not have the same pain level or tolerance level, I'm just saying for me, IT HURT. That damned drain "football" suction port thing is what literally felt like they were suctioning my insides out! IF you have one, make them empty it (or have family do it) within 2 hours, do not let it get too full or have too much suction on it because I thought I was going to die from the pain.
And you don't have to take anything with you, I merely said that you might wish you had it. It is hard enough to be recovering from surgery, but if you are a chronic pain patient like I am, those pain meds help make life bearable most days for me, to be hurting from fresh incisions and still have my back & neck pain & hips hurting is a lot to bear. Many of the bariatric patients I speak to have spinal issues which is why so many of them are overweight to begin with as they cannot get much exercise due to pain issues or mobility issues.
And I also said, I'd do it again, but just like to be prepared for whatever you are going to encounter.
I also had a LapBand REMOVED and then replaced with a new Gastric Bypass so a 2-in-1 surgery which may have made mine more painful than what you're getting.
In any event, see you on the other side of it and wishing you a lot of success! peace

Shan0 got a reaction from BeanitoDiego in August 2023 Surgery Buddies!I had a pretty rough go. I actually ended up back in the hospital after being discharged because they gave me the wrong pain medication. The pain medication they had been giving me (hydrocodone) doesn’t do anything at all for me. I kept telling them that but they kept using it and then promised that they would send me home with oxycodone and didn’t. So at three in the morning I had to go to the ER and be readmitted. It was excruciatingly painful when I was not on pain meds that were effective. Mostly the gas in my upper shoulders was the painful part. I had a hiatal hernia repair and a bypass.
My doctor was not fantastic, I did not necessarily need to be readmitted to the hospital. I really just needed the correct prescription. But he wanted me in there so he could watch me, or for some other reason? He seemed very angry with me.
I will say this. I wish I had known that it could be that painful. I would’ve been able to more completely prepare myself and be more accepting of the pain if I knew it was coming. That’s why I’m mentioning it to you all, not to scare anyone but just so you can get ready in case you are one of the people that it hurts. It clearly doesn’t hurt everyone.
As for me, I’ve had two spinal cord surgeries that were less painful than this one. So everyone has a different experience, but mine was not fantastic. That said, I feel ok now and am home, doing well.
Good luck, all.

Shan0 got a reaction from Andrea13$ in August 2023 Surgery Buddies! It’s great that there’s a cohort of us! I’m not on any sort of pre-diet yet really, but it will be starting soon. I’m happy about this, even though weight loss is only part of the reason I’m doing it. They’re addressing my Barrett’s Esophagus too, which will be a relief.
How are you all feeling?
-
Shan0 got a reaction from BeanitoDiego in August 2023 Surgery Buddies!Good luck to all of you! And I’m glad to hear that those of you who had the surgery recently are doing OK. Mine is coming up on Tuesday so we’ll see how this goes. Not particularly enjoying the clear liquid diet, I have to say ?
Thank goodness it’s temporary.

Shan0 reacted to Deep6 in Greetings, Earthlings, I Come in PeaceHi, just signed up, didn't see an "introducing yourself" section. Have had various gastro related issues for the last couple years, found that I did not tolerate the PPI well, but have Barrett's Esophagus, which has to be addressed. Since I gained a fair amount of weight during Covid, looks like I qualify for bypass surgery which is a recommended approach to dealing with the Barrett's. I'm still going through various qualifying phases, but the surgeon/hospital here seem to know the drill. Still need to get my cardio doc to sign off and to see my primary.
At this point in my life, near 70 years old, having been reduced to the Fodmap diet to minimize GERD (acid reflux), I'm ok with the more limited post surgical diet. I'm also looking to get my mobility back-- resumed at the gym, but it isn't as easy to drop the weight as it was 10 or 15 years ago when I stopped smoking and went full maniac on diet (paleo) and exercise (2 workouts/day plus swimming, pilates, etc).
Just wanted to plug in here and as things progress on this journey, tap into the knowledge base here.
Glad I found this place.

Hello all, I'm 10 weeks out from RNY and overall doing pretty good. My problem is I can't plan my food menu because one day I'll like a food, like eggs, and the next day it repulses me. Can't stand the smell of it. I'm like this with almost everything I'm eating. I can NOT do shakes ever again. I tried again about a month ago and gagged and threw it out along with the damn shaker bottle. Same with soups and broths. Can't even look at them. ONe day I'll do good with chicken and the next it sickens me. I'm often hungry, but eating makes me feel like crap. I enjoy nothing. I eat slow and don't eat until I am too full, so it's not like I'm overeating and getting sick from a food and then not wanting to eat it again. It makes me sad. Frustrating as hell. I'm hungry now, but nothing sounds good, looks good or tastes good. I often feel crappy after eating. Nauseated. Again, not eating until I'm too full, so it doesn't make sense to me. My dietician wants me to get in more protein but I can't figure out how. There is a part of me that wishes I never would've had the surgery because I'm so sick of feeling like crap. I have low/no energy. I'm taking all my vitamins and supplements. Anyone else have this problem? Will it get better over time? I have no idea what I'll take to work for lunch tomorrow. The chicken I made yesterday is grossing me out now. UGH!! Advice? I'm 34 pounds down now. I'm stalled but feel like it's because I'm not eating enough. I cannot do yogurt or much cheese as I have a hard time with milk products as well. Ack! One more thing I'll add is that I found I can't tolerate sugar free things either. I don't know if it's the xylitol, artificial sweeteners or what. Not eating sugary things either.

Shan0 reacted to Smanky in Bullying post opSome people are garbage and love to announce to the world that they're garbage, like the sh*tgoblins in that car. You wouldn't want their approval even if you could get it. I know it's hard when you're feeling low, but don't let complete strangers bring you down. Don't give them that power. The only opinions that matter are from people you like and respect, not shouty randos who are probably just college kids.

Shan0 reacted to catwoman7 in Surgeon suggested bypass instead of sleeve.first of all, only about 30% of bypassers dump (I never have - and I know lots of others who never have, either). It's caused by eating too much sugar at one sitting, so you can prevent it by....not eating a lot of sugar at one sitting.
the issue with restaurants is temporary - just the first few weeks. Once you're a couple months out, you'll be able to find things on practically any menu that you can eat - and once you're about six months out, you'll be cleared to eat any food item (you may still have some intolerances, but nothing will be off the table). My new normal (well, not so new anymore since I'm eight years out) is either ordering an appetizer or two, or ordering an entree and having them box up half of it to take home. Honestly, most of my never-been-obese women friends do exactly the same. At this point, no one would be able to tell I've had weight loss surgery - they'd just assume I'm a "light eater".
and what are you throwing your cookbooks out for? I never threw out a single one - and I've since added a few more to my collection! I enjoy cooking and I cook a lot. I just eat smaller portions now, and I only occasionally indulge in something like chips or dessert.
honestly, the eating that people often associate with weight loss patients doesn't last forever. It's tough the first month or two (well, esp the first month), so I tried to avoid going out to eat. But after that you can eat more variety and should be able to find things you can eat at any restaurant. And then, as I said, after about six months, there won't be any food restrictions.
It takes about 1600 calories/day to maintain my weight (although that varies a lot among people - I know women who can only eat around 1200 and others who can eat 2000), and I eat very nutritiously most of the time. Yes there are days when I overeat or splurge on some junky thing, but it's not very often - and I'm back on track the next day. There are times when I wish I could eat whatever I want and however much I want every day, but very few people can do that - and it sure didn't work for me since it got me up to almost 400 lbs. I think I'm eating much more like a "normie" now.

Shan0 reacted to areyoukiddingme in Surgeon suggested bypass instead of sleeve.Had my first visit with the surgeon last week about getting the sleeve. Did heaps of research and checked out forums prior to appt. Surgeon suggested getting the bypass. Said research shows it is more successful long term and as I am in my 50s I wouldn’t want to be doing another op in my mid 60s. Bypass is also reversible.
I agreed to a bypass on the spot as the surgeon should know what’s best for me. He said he has even reduced the cost of a bypass to match the sleeve so patients would not be deciding on a procedure based solely on cost. Surgery next month.
Very worried about ever being able to go to a restaurant in the future due to lack of suitable menu choices and ending up with dumping in a public setting. Not sure how I would cope when travelling as will be relying on others to prepare my meals. Any advice on these scenarios would be much appreciated.
I just spent the weekend donating many of my gorgeous cookbooks as I can’t see myself ever using them again. I have another three bookcases to go through.
Next step will be digging out the smaller clothes I never donated as I really liked them. I have a feeling I won’t be interested in many of my old clothes anymore and will want to celebrate my new figure with some new items. I know my smallest clothes are going to end up too big in the near future. Can’t wait.
Would love to hear from others about their journey and any tips or tricks you can offer. -
Shan0 reacted to flabbergasted in Surgeon suggested bypass instead of sleeve.I am 50yrs old and had gastric bypass dec. 19. My surgeon recommended gb over the sleeve because I have gerd and he said the sleeve would make it worse. I was disappointed and wasn't sure about being re-routed. I agreed as I trusted my surgeon. I do not regret my decision. I had very little discomfort from the surgery. I have had no problems with gerd. I was hoping that my body would reject sugar but it does not. My surgeon had told me prior to surgery that dumping syndrome is only a possible side effect. I have had a few very mild cases, keep in mind I am a sugar-holic. I can still consume sugar and fat moderately.
I have found that I prefer protein shakes to food most of the time. I don't and never have liked cooking. If you enjoy cooking and your recipes you will probably be able to tolerate it in small amounts. One thing I've found is that you don't know what your stomach can handle until after the surgery. It is different for everyone. Some are sensitive to sugar and fat, some are not. There's no way to tell ahead of time. My only regret is that I still get hungry and my stomach still growls (not the gurgle you hear when it's circling the drain that is different). Gastric bypass does not completely get rid of ghrelin. Once I got my routine down it lessened. Hopefully will stop soon.
Don't overthink and worry too much. Just take it one step at a time, your body will tell you what to do. Once you heal, you should be able to eat normally for the most part in small amounts as I do.
This is my first post ever so forgive me if I've rambled or responded incorrectly.

Shan0 reacted to MasonMoonGirl in Depressed before surgerySame here my original surgery was supposed to be on April 26th. I've lost 22 pounds since my heaviest from following the preop diet before. About 2 weeks before I freaked out and cancelled. Too many people were telling me not to do it, horror stories and I barely had any support. This time I have not told anyone I'm doing it yet except for my sister and best friend. My pre op isn't as restrictive, they didn't give me a set calorie count and liquid starts 2 days before surgery.
I did keto diet on my own before this from 2019-2020 and lost 90 pounds naturally, but I gained it back when I met my significant other and went off that diet. I feel like i dont like to exercise so that worries me and haven't found the motivation to start. I keep telling myself it's not important for weight loss and I'll do that x amount of weeks before or after the surgery.
It doesn't help that my significant other isn't really supportive. They are worried for me and is the type that if I say I'm depressed and start crying about the surgery, instead of talking me thru it and saying it will pass, they will start crying too ??, blame themself for not stopping me, say they dont want to see me suffer and convince me I'm not ready to do it and they won't be able to stand seeing me suffer after. Although I know it's good intentioned again, I need someone who's not as soft. I should be able to say I'm feeling depressed about it without them being the one that gets sad and emotional, I'm the one that should be sad lol.
Last time was the second time I cancelled the surgery after going thru all of the motions. Now I'm telling myself third time is the charm and the office is going to think I'm nuts if I keep freaking out and canceling then saying just kidding the next week ??
