One year!!!

So, today It's been officially one year since my surgery. Yay!

I am very happy about how much I lost. I started at 264 and am now at 154 and still want to lose a little bit more so my doctor can refer me to plastics. It's slow going but it's going.

I wasn't sure what I was going to write but decided to just go with how I was feeling. One of things I love is I'm much smaller and have more energy but I am also a bit resentful. Bigger people aren't taken seriously sometimes by doctors. I complained of chest pain before the weight loss and was told your blood pressure is too high. Now that I am smaller I was told well that shouldn't be happening and got a CT scan done on Thursday. I had to take prednisone and Benadryl because I'm allergic to the dye contrast. Well they did find two blockages in my arteries one at 70% so tomorrow I have to go in and get a stent put in and I'm a bit pissed off that this could have been taken care of earlier if they had taken my concerns seriously. I haven't done any exercise in a month cause I'm too scared I'll keel over with a heart attack. The moral of this story is to pay attention to your body and if you have concerns speak with your doctor and be insistent if you need them to listen.

its very unfortunate that fat-phobia is very prevalent in the medical field. I have had friends that have had OBGYN appts coded as weight consults and their insurance denied the visits, even though the visit was birth control and the doctor commented on weight...

Congratulations on your success!

Medical incompetence when it comes to weight, race, or any of several other factors is horrifying. I'm sure many of us have similar stories.

In my experience, a lot of doctors tend to be pompous and opinionated because they know better than their patients and they make up their minds on superficial evidence and are reluctant to change it. My XDIL (young and overweight) had a gallbladder attack, the paramedics thought it was gall bladder, the ER doc said no and sent her home and she ended up having emergency surgery. It took me 5 years and a new doc to get my back issue diagnosed (arthritis in my neck).

I hope your surgery goes well, and maybe vent some anger by sending a note to the other doc thanking him for almost letting you die. Probably won't make him think twice next time, but you never know.

Congrats on your 1 year anniversary! I am sorry though that it took for wls to be taken seriously. That really sucks! And for shame to doctors who judge someone's symptoms by their weight. All the best to you!

Absolutely see your frustration. I had lost 194lbs before my revision revision (my original being ruined by a bad pregnancy, hemorrhaged ovaries that had to be removed. A diagnosis of Hypothyroidism and then PCOS) and when I was a smaller more ‘normal human sized’, my concerned were actually taken into account when I spoke to my health professional versus when I weight 365 before hand and have gained 100lb back and an chubby now, the doctor basically blames EVERYTHING you complain about on the fact that you’re fat or you’re not working out enough and assumed you’re eating Cookies and candy all day to get so big so then comes the nutritionist recommendations instead of a cardiologist appoint or what have you.

This is all learned and considered acceptable behavior largely do to social conditioning and it’s sad.

Proud of you for doing so happy in your year though. You’re doing amazing!
