Here we go! Started clear liquid pre-op diet today for surgery tomorrow (time TBD but likely early morning). I so appreciate all that have reported on their experiences - I’m getting a little more nervous by the hour. 😨

My doc does it outpatient but it sounds like everyone else has had at least a night in hospital?? That’s also making me nervous, like maybe I will have trouble at home and should be in the hospital. I’m going to check some other threads and see if outpatient is normal.

Thinking of everyone pre-op (good luck to you!) and all that have already gone (hope you are having and/or continuing an easy recovery!). I’ll report back on how it all goes tomorrow!

I’m out patient As well. My doctor said it pretty well depends on how far away from the hospital you live.

I have my first appointment Sept.15! I’m excited but anxious too! I’m a self pay patient which makes the wheels move much quicker, but the financial commitment is huge! I have very severe arthritis which has been exacerbated by my obesity. I’ve dieted my whole teenaged to adult life and have lost weight before, but I never quite made it to the “finish line.” My whole life I’ve served others and was happy to do so, but this decision to go through weight loss surgery is all about me and my health. I haven’t made my final decision on which procedure to have, but I’m leaning toward the sleeve. So glad there is a forum….I’m sure I’ll have lots of questions as I go along…especially for any of you my age-ish (57).

I just turned 53 and I'm right there with you! When my doc asked,
"have you been heavy your whole adult life?", I realized that the answer was YES. I had never even thought about it in those terms before. Even with losing 30 lbs here, 70 lbs there just to gain them back, I still could only answer YES....I've read lots of books and this forum is SO GOOD. Good luck on your journey!

My surgeon said I could be outpatient depending on how I feel, but mine was at noon and the anesthesia absolutely didn't leave my system for hours, definitely not in shape to leave early, even with a family member. I hated my hospital stay but I'm glad I had it. Not saying you should lie, but definitely stress to the RNs if you're feeling pain and discomfort.

Well, that definitely helps me! I just got the call that I have to be at the hospital at.....wait for it......4:45AM. So, I guess they are having me stay all day rather than doing the overnight thing. I may not sleep tonight - I have to drink my pre surgery drink one hour before arrival - pretty sure that's the middle of the night LOL! Thanks for the feedback - I'll look for more updates from you. Hope all is well.

Hi everyone! Welcome to all those that have joined recently, and I'm thinking of all of you that have had surgeries already!

Those of you that are sharing your experiences, thanks a bunch! It is helpful to hear real stories and experiences while I'm waiting for my surgery day - Sept 15.

I start liquid diet tomorrow. Picked up my pre-surgery wash today and paid the balance. I'm self -pay... ouchie! It's getting real now!!

Blessings, love and light to you all!!

Had my VSG yesterday. Came home today. No nausea, no pain (of course that may pop up) lol

Now on to the Stage one for 14 days. - broth, and Premiere Protein Shakes, SF 1 popsicle . 1 SF Jello.

So stinking proud of you! Feeling like a failure in comparison (not really…we are all different) but I am so glad you could skip the nausea. It is truly the worst. Congratulations!!!!

I’m happy that you didn’t experience any nausea or pain. I’ve asked GOD to cover me and I’ve also prayed for no complications, nausea, or pain as well. It’s getting closer for me. My surgery date is Monday September 26. Not too sure how to feel right now

You may be surprised that you aren’t as hungry as you think. The Protein in the shake should fill you up for quite a while. I am a year and a half out and I still have a Protein Shake every morning and it fills me up until lunch. I do this by choice and obviously wouldn’t if I was hungry. Now protein does nothing for head hunger though. Are you allowed sugar free popsicles or Jello? Those helped me to feel like I was actually chewing something which I missed during my post op liquid diet

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
