Hi all: I’m hanging out in June SB because I am hoping against hope that my surgery date is mid June. My Results visit is 5/16 and I hope to get the date at that visit. Cigna has had my insurance packet for 1 week. Doctor’s office says they take 2 weeks to study it.
I began the liver shrinking diet on Tuesday, 5/3 (per doctors office) and I’m down 6 lbs which is nothing short of a miracle for me.
A typical eating plan in a day is 2 Atkins Plus shakes, 1 or 2 Oikos yogurts, an Aldi Shrimp meal (140 calories), 64oz Water and sugar free ice pops. I WAS hungry on Day 4-yesterday- but I dropped 2 lbs overnight which explains that.
I’m using vitamin patches because they are easy and convenient. My nutritionist said they are not effective but drinking all that water makes the thought of swallowing pills impossible. I get blood drawn in one month and any positive change in my levels means the Patches are okay. We’ll see.
Good luck to all…I am having RNY LAP with hiatal hernia repair.
Oh, yeah, endoscopy scheduled tentatively for 5/20.
Keep your surgery and recovery stories coming. I learn so much from them.

You are starting the pre op diet already? Even before your surgery is scheduled possibily for mid June? seems very early especially with your low BMI. For most its 1 week or 2 weeks before surgery date. But of course i am no surgeon lmao. Good luck!! You loose weight pretty fast during the pre op diet. I lost i think 12lb during my two week liquid diet.

I asked the surgery coordinator the same thing when we set up the 5/16 appointment? “You want me to start now? I could be 6-7 weeks out from surgery.” She replied: “Let’s see. Your BMI really isn’t that high, you could start it after you see him on 5/16 if you want. BUT, some of our patients like to start it as far in advance as they can.”
🤷🏻‍♀️I decided to start it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It gave me a chance to find a Protein Drink I really like. And, truthfully, I think my surgeon things I’ll opt for a surgery date like 5/20 if it’s available. But, I’m committed to staying in school till the students are finished which is 6/8. I’m not scheduling a date prior to that.
I’m fine with it. It’s been good for me to see that the numbers on the scale are going in the correct direction, and I haven’t eaten my arms off yet. 🤣😂 It’s giving me time to develop coping strategies…I’m not an emotional eater, but I will pop something into my mouth simply because it’s there for the taking. I wasn’t always like that, but when the lbs started coming in, I figured what the heck…might as well enjoy it.
This week was Teacher Appreciation Week and every.single.day thete was food EVERYWHERE: candy apples 😳, burgers and fries, Bagels and cream cheese, donuts, you name it. I stayed away from the myriad of places where food was spread out and kept busy and focused. My assistant is a *itch who never eats anything and this week she kept bringing plates of food into our room. I ignored her. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I guess I started early more for me than anything else. I’m thrilled to see I’m losing on this plan, because in the past, I could cut back, walk incessantly and actually gain a pound after a month. 🤦🏻‍♀️
This has been good for me.
🤗

Good luck, Mariann! It is exciting to know your surgery date is getting closer! That does seem like a long time to do the pre-op diet, but on the plus side, if you get really hungry, you could actually eat something substantial as long as it is prior to two weeks from your actual surgery date. I guess it will be good practice! I lost 12 pounds during my 2 week pre-op which was awesome because it put my right back into ONEderland! lol - I hear your frustration about the office foodies. Before my VSG it was a daily battle to stay away from all of the workplace Snacks. Now when I look at the jars of candy and trays of donuts all I can think is how miserable I was after eating that stuff and how much better I feel now :)

Thank you! I’m trying to focus on the positive of doing the liver shrinking for such a long time, and so far I’m okay with it. It does give me a sense of being in control….which is the exact opposite of how I would feel after indulging in junk food.< br /> I can take a huge amount of satisfaction now from a few cooked shrimp. LOL
I hadn’t even thought about the fact that with this much advance time, it does provide the opportunity to eat something if I must. In fact, this weekend I ordered these cinnamon rolls from someone doing a fundraiser for Ukraine. I did not intend to even try to eat one. However, I did let myself have one small taste, and I was good with that. THAT was an interesting thing to do. My nutritionist had talked about it in class, and I’m glad I tried it.
As far as onederland, I can’t wait to get back there. 🤗 Already I see that my 3X clothes are hanging off me. With school coming to an end, at least I can wait till September to buy new clothes.
And, if I lost 12 lbs on this pre-op diet, I’d turn cartwheels! LOL
Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Thanks for writing! 🤗

Sorry for the late reply. I haven't logged on for awhile! I hope your preop diet is going smoothly!

I would love to hear your outcome from the vitamin patches Marianne if they work I'm definitely going to try some bc I'm just so hopeless in remembering to take my supplements daily lol

I am going to give the vitamin patches a 👍. I bought them from the store at this website. I actually wear 2 of each that I bought...double the dose. I do this because my nutritionist told me they were not effective. 🤷‍♀️ Of course when someone tells me something is ineffective, it stands to reason that I buy them and use twice as many as directed.

When I upped to two patches/day of each pack that I bought (iron; Omega 3s; B-complex; Biotin for hair, skin and nails; multi-vitamins; and D3 with calcium;), I did feel a difference when I was consistently using them every day for about a month.

And, I know that's 12 Patches which does take some time in the morning, but I am giving them a thumbs up!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
