What’s your revision story? Was your revision as effective as your first surgery?

Recommended Posts

I had a successful sleeve surgery five years ago, then had a baby and got stuck in a pandemic. I’ve put on so much weight, but still nowhere near my original starting weight and don’t intend to get back there!

I am planning to get a revision surgery, and right now I am most seriously considering the mini gastric bypass. I contacted a couple of doctors and they tried to suggest a sleeve revision, but I can’t find any success stories of people who were re-sleeved and lost substantial quantities of weight. Which got me thinking?…

Do any of the revision surgeries produce substantial weight loss? If you have gone from sleeve to the mini gastric bypass or another procedure and have a story to share I would greatly appreciate hearing it.

Did your revision successfully eliminate your regain? Did you get lower than you did the first time and your weight loss goals? Were you able to lose all your excess weight on your second time around? Did it work as rapidly as the first one?

Hi. I had gastric sleeve surgery in 2017. I went from 130kg down to 90kg, then slowly regained to 110kg. Over time I also developed GERD. I had revision surgery to gastric bypass in dec 2020. I’m happy to say that my GERD is gone completely. And weight loss has been great for me. It has been a little slower then the first time around. But happy to say I’m down to 77kg - so 13kg LOWER then I got to with the sleeve.
Slow and steady, I’m in no rush, just so happy to be on the downward trend overall.
All the best :)

most people don't lose a ton of weight with revisions because the "magic" of virgin surgeries isn't there with revisions, but some people do manage to lose a lot with a lot of hard work. I think I've read the average is about 20-30 lbs with revisions, but then, that's an average. If you really work at it, you could probably lose quite a bit more than that.

if you read enough posts it seems that the rate of loss is a little slower after revision

I’m currently 2 yrs post revision from VSG to RNY (for GERD not regain) and for me I have been able to maintain the same weight I was with VSG but I’m now GERD free.

Initially I lost a little but since I was already at goal my surgeon wanted me to maintain not lose so I ate whatever I wanted for a short period of time. Then went back to normal (post bari lifestyle of moderation and overall food changes/substitution)

Knowing what I now know, I think revisioners should consider asking their surgeons:

1. No GERD but substantial regain- Should I consider VSG to DS/SIPS for greater weightloss?

2. GERD and substantial regain- Should I convert from VSG to RNY with a longer bypass?

3. GERD but no regain- Should I convert from VSG to RNY with a slightly shorter bypass to prevent excess loss?

Good Luck ❤️

As far as weight loss goes I constantly struggled to keep myself under 175 with the sleeve and I was only eating around 1000-1200 calories a day. I lost 131 lbs with sleeve and I stuck to the plan that first year. I revised because of GERD weighing in at 180 in 5/2020 I lost an additional 28 lbs and my weight is stable for once !!!! The best part about this bypass so far is my weight is stable and I dont struggle to stay at this weight which is 13lbs less then I got with VSG. Good luck to you.

That’s amazing. I actually had the same issue but I considered it a great success because I went from 323 to 180. At one point, due to barely eating and exercising like crazy I got down to 160 but I was ill. Nonetheless, I’m guessing I’m back up around 215 now at this point postpartum and basically wanna lose another hundred pounds. I’m going to go all the way but I hear stories about people only dropping 30 pounds on their second surgery and I don’t think it’s worth it

These questions are really helpful. Thank you. Your case, it sounds like it was perfect! Congratulations! But you know what I had the same fears the first time I had surgery – and I would be the one that didn’t lose the weight and it wasn’t true. I need to lose 70 to 90 pounds at this point and my concern is not the rate of speed but whether or not it’s worth going through a life-changing surgery the results may only be a third of what I’m looking for

I disagree on losing less weight 2nd time around. It may be harder but if you follow the rules you will lose the weight. Example

I weighed 296 day of surgery VSG I lost 14 lbs first month.

I weighed 180 day of surgery RNY I lost 12 lbs first month !!!!!

There is 116 lbs difference in starting weight for those 2 surgeries and yet 2 lb difference in weight loss.

SW 280, VSG DOS 263 LW 172 but weighed 177 for about 4years. Got GERD and went up to 233! Revision to Bypass 11/2/20 and today 165! Not even a year our yet. So yes you will lose. Not as much as the first time but I’m still working out a lot and I drop when I eat more calories. I’m at 1,000-1,200 a day right now and run 5x a week 2 miles a day and weights 2x a week. I wish I would have don’t this the first time around lol BUT the surg was so painful I was like omggg why lord. My doc said well you have to understand I had to make the stomach slim again since it was stretched , THEN do the bypass so it was a lot of work. Yikes! Lol so thankful. Anyways good luck! Now I get my plastic surgery so I can feel comfy and get rid of this old skin lol

I posted this on a different thread, but wanted to share. Not sure why the revision has been so successful for me, but I'm loving the results.

Here are my stats over my 6 year journey.

Highest weight May 2012 - 222 lbs.

Gastric sleeve surgery weight November 2014 - 212 lbs.

Lowest weight post sleeve May 2015 - 151 post op 6 months (61 lbs. lost)

Highest weight prior to revision surgery January 2019 - 205 lbs. (54 lbs. gained)

Weight day of revision surgery October 2020 - 185 lbs.

Current weight August 2021 (10 months post op) - 128 lbs. (57 lbs. lost)

I hope that I never have to add a line that says I've gained weight back again!!!!

Good luck on your journey!!!!

So far I have had good luck in revision due to weight gain.
starting weight for sleeve 254

3 months out 204.5

weight loss of 50.5

———————————

starting weight for bypass 245.5

3 months out I weigh 199 today (wooo!)

weight loss 46.5

So the weight loss has been about the same but it has felt easier. I’m very glad I did the second surgery.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
