Anyone else have a swollen Uvula (dangly thing at back of throat) post surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm 2-days post VSG and doing pretty good, with the exception of a massively swollen uvula. Every time I swallow it feels like I have to get around a huge piece of skin (I know - gross) that is partially blocking and it feels like it gets "tangled" which triggers my gag reflex. Anyone else deal with this? Any wisdom or advice to help it go back to normal? It's driving me bananas and making me want to avoid sipping (I still am though, don't want a trip to the ER for fluids).

I didn't - although it was probably from the breathing tube they used during surgery. The inflammation should probably go away on its own in a few days, I would guess..

I did. The swelling went down after about three days, but my throat was scratchy for about a week. Hang in there, and keep drinking Water. It hurts, but it will actually help it feel better faster if you can stay hydrated. ❤️

Haven't had the surgery yet but whenever I get that due to a cold, allergies, sleeping with my mouth open or whatever, I find that gargling with Listerine a few times a day knocks that bad boy back down to size within a day, usually. I guess it acts like a disinfectant/bacteria killer in a way? Who knows but it seems to work.

Yes, I was told by the surgeon this would happen and it did. Its from the breathing tub and it goes away in a few days.

Warm tea helps :)

I totally posted the following on the wrong (completely unrelated) thread the other day...meant to post it here, oopsies:

---------

I had a swollen dangly thing years ago when I had my wisdom teeth removed.

My first recommendation would be to contact your surgeon...which you already did.

Next would be pain management/recovery. You could try gargling with salted warm Water, get one of those throat sprays that numb the throat, chew on ice chips, suck on a soothing lozenge like eucalyptus or honey.

Don't forget to stay hydrated and get lots of rest.

Good Luck! ❤️

thanks folks! I'm 6 days out now and the swelling has gone down a bit. Throat is still very scratchy, and there is some swelling but it's a lot better.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
