I use cannabis at night to help with fibromyalgia (I am in a legal state) so I don't have to take other meds. My surgeon is aware, and is okay with it. Didn't say I needed to stop before surgery, and said I could resume after (my surgery is November 2).

I *do* plan on stopping during my pre-op diet, simply because I'll be starving enough... I don't want to make it worse with the munchies (CBD only doesn't provide enough pain relief, so switching to that to avoid munchies would be about the same as just stopping altogether. If I need pain relief during this time, I'll take other meds.)

My question is about afterward... Does anyone have any personal experience, or "know someone" who has experience with WLS and cannabis, like, when you're in the rapid weight loss, not really hungry phase, will the munchies be under control? I realize everyone is different, but would like to hear personal accounts from those who have used cannabis after WLS.

Thanks!

I was on medically prescribed cannabis tincture following back surgery. It helped a great deal with pain and inflammation, and as you suggest, was much better than opiod. In the first few months post WLS it was fine, still helping and no increased appetite. As I neared month 6 post WLS, I noticed my appetite was returning and the tincture was making it harder to stay on plan. By then I was down 50lbs which helped back pain so much that I just quit the cannabis tincture completely. I wish you the best, may your body lead you to a good place!

Just my experience, ive used the devils lettuce every single day since ive been home. 🤷‍♂️. Thats just me. I often do it before my meals so that if munchies were a problem, they would be taken care of. Also i do it before bed. But usually by that time im ready to pass out anyway and dont have to worry about food. but if youre in a legal state you can get the cbd flower with very low thc in it if youre worried about munchies. Good luck.

I also use it everyday, and have had no issues with the munchies.

I have been taking an edible with THC since I've come home from my surgery. I was also open about it with my surgeon and he was fine with it. The edibles help the pain and help me sleep- and so I don't need to rely on the intense pain meds they prescribed.

I’m not in a legal state.... so someone I know has used cannabis (vape pen) for chronic back pain without issue and thankfully no desire for food since sleeve surgery

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
