Hello there

What should I expect when I go to my consult on June 1st? Thankfully they're allowing another person to come in with me who could also ask questions and such.

I am planning on getting a new dietitian / nutritionist as my current one doesn't specialize in bypass or had extra training. She said to ask the surgeon who I should see on this.

My initial consult was a class, and there were 5 of us in attendance. A nurse led the discussion with a power point presentation, about the various surgical options, what to expect, etc. She also discussed insurance requirements, and gave us a checklist of pre-op testing that needed to be completed to get insurance approval. From there, we were taken back individually to get weighed in, meet with the nutritionist, and then the doctor.

After I was done, I was given an appt to see the nutritionist the following month, and was off an running to get everything done on my checklist!

I am expecting the 4-6 month requirement as some who said they were on Medicaid/Medicare had to go thru that. I am also expecting to try to lose or maintain the weight but with fluctuation being a thing for me....

Went to my consult, she said I was a perfect candidate for surgery. Dr Francois was blunt and honest about everything, no hand holding or holding back whatsoever. She said many people get this surgery thinking it'll fix their addiction or habits to fast food or junk food, and that's just not true. You need to make a change today, and not after the surgery. I'm one of those people who eat out a lot due to convenience and such and also am a picky eater.
It sounds like she is approving of me getting it, but HIGHLY SUGGESTS a change in my eating habits. NO FAST FOOD, NO SODA!!! In short, I have been referred to a different city in IL to undergo this program ASAP.

I haven't heard from them yet, but went ahead and asked the surgeon's office for the info so I can call myself in a few weeks or so if need be.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
