DS and pain relief

So, I am in the process of getting all of my appt.s done so I can get my DS surgery done around the end of Sept. The biggest question I have is this, what can you take for over the counter pain relief? I am getting DS done because I have a problem with arthritis in my hip, so I can get more weight off of it so I may have less pain and such until the time comes that I get a full hip replacement. I currently take meloxicam and advil for pain relief, the little it provides.

You will need to work with your doc. NSAIDs are not recommended as they contribute to stomach ulcers.

Yes, this is something to pass by your surgical team. The BPD/DS and VSG are a lot more tolerant of NSAIDs than the RNY (which started the whole NSAID thing in the bariatric world) but they are still something to be careful with, and surgeons' experiences and opinions vary widely. Our program allowed them as soon as when narcotic pain relievers were no longer appropriate; others wait longer into the healing phase and others may not permit them at all. In any case, if you are permitted to use them they are something to use under medical supervision (even if they are OTC) and have your surgeon in the loop.

@CoramDeoI take anything. No limitations at all. From Vicodin to Advil to Aspirin and anything in between. Thankfully, I don’t often need them.

After my gb was removed (3 years post DS) I find I must take only 1 tablet/capsule every half hour as if I take more I get pancreatitis. But that’s just me. Most DSers I know have no issues or restrictions.

Thanks. This is my biggest concern because while I am getting the surgery mainly to get weight off the joint and hopefully lessen the pain, no matter what it will take some time and I don't know how well I could handle not being able to take anything OTC.

@CoramDeoJust make sure you speak to your surgeon to find out when you can take what. You might have to be creative initially. You have to remember you're going to have a brand new stomach and system. I'll never forget what my surgeon said to me, "Think of this as an infant's stomach. You had one stomach for most of your life and now a brand new infant stomach."

@CoramDeoOh, and remember we only take tablets or capsules. Dry. No gelcaps.

And no XL or XR (by that I mean all day tablets or capsules).
