Why am I so hungry just a few days after surgery?

Ok, so my doctor said that we would have a hard time even being able to drink as much fluids as we should after surgery. Well that doesn't seem to be a huge issue but my biggest one right now is I am starving! I thought that wouldn't be the case and I am wanting to eat so bad. Right now being in the first week out I am only allowed to have clear liquids like water, broth and I can have some protein shakes. These are not filling me up and tonight has been really bad. I am not one who expects my family not to eat in front of me and tonight was tough not to eat some of the food they were eating. Is this something anyone else had in the beginning? I get it, psychologically I am used to eating and my brain is telling me to eat. I would not have had to have the surgery if I didn't like to eat before and didn't overeat! I just really hope this goes away some once I can start eating some food with consistency?

  • Yeah, this liquid diet is horrible. I mean I didn’t get overweight by not wanting to eat lol I can’t wait until this first week is over and I can at least eat the super soft foods like yogurt, oatmeal

  • I felt like that too even though I could hardly eat a thing...once you get to pureed foods... you'll feel full too fast and probably find yourself having to span your meal for hours to get the protein

are you on some kind of prescription antacid like omeprazole (prescription Prilosec)? Some people claim that acid can mimic hunger.

I felt like I was hungry right after surgery too. It takes a while and getting past the liquid diet (which really isn't food) to start feeling like you aren't starving. It's kind of a mind game that you play with yourself at first. I was glad to get to at least week 2.

They did put me on one but my insurance wouldn’t cover it due to it being over the counter. Which really made me mad since the one I needed were the capsules right now that I can pull apart and put the beads in something to take them until a couple weeks and can absorb it by taking the pill. So I tried crushing the over the counter ones and they were soooo bad I just could not do it. I did get some from my mom tonight that come apart and I can take the beads out that way and will start those tomorrow. I hope that is the problem and it is just me not being able to take enough antacid and that is what is making me feel so hungry! Thanks for the suggestion, this gives me hope it is something as easy as that because I really hate feeling this way after going through so much to have this surgery.

I’m agreeing with others that this is more than likely acid production.
As someone with a lifetime history of acid reflux, I can tell you that I’ve noticed this and usually it happens at times when I might usually eat. It’s like the body knows that food should be coming and preps. Your brain is more than likely mis-interpreting this as “hunger”
Also I’ve noticed my stomach making horrible growling noises that at first I wanted to interpret as hunger, but realized it was just my digestive system yet again trying to outsmart the surgery and “ask” for food.
Moving from liquids to pureees will help so much because your new stomach will actually have something to work with.
Hang in there and get to week 2.
I had the same issue day 3 post op and agree with the head hunger theory.

It seems to be getting a little better but I can go from great mood to really bad real quick due to all of a sudden feeling like I am starving! My poor family right now LOL I go in next week for my post op and I hope they add some puree foods to my diet. Do they usually do that the second week or are they going to make me go another whole week on this liquid diet??
