Sick and thirsty and regretting

Recommended Posts

I’m ab three weeks out and I’m having a hard time. I’m tired all the time, it’s hard to eat anything! I feel like most things sit in my tummy for hours ! I randomly woke up Sunday and couldn’t keep a thing down not even Water. Speaking of water... I’m SO THIRSTY!!! The small sips aren’t doing anything and after a few sips I’m feeling a “sick feeling”. Before surgery I drank a lot of sparkling water which I know I can’t have. All I wanna do is use a straw and guzzle down some ice cold water but I can’t and I’m so frustrated! Regretting this at this point.. even though I’m 37!lbs. is it worth it if I’m feeling like the walking dead? Sorry for the rant I’ve just had it

You got this. Looking at your picture, you are gorgeous and it can only get better from here. Just try to stay positive and keep sipping. If you feel too dehydrated, there's always IV fluids. You will get passed the hard part and become a better you because of it.

Rant away,

Feeling regret or buys remorse can be a normal emotion. Take things slow and give yourself time to heal. Know that things will not be like this forever. Congratulations on 37 down.

Are you supposed to be eating 3 weeks out? Almost all post-op diet's I've seen for Sleeved patients is liquids only for a month. With the water, try adjusting the temperature and taste with sugar free flavorings. Water "texture" intolerance is fairly common post op, at least until you are fully healed. Check out some of the Protein water style Proteins that are clear, these fit into your clear phase and provide you with protein when you can't consume full liquids or actual foods. Might help you out. Have you been in contact with your surgical team about the issues you are having? If not, please do so!

Yes! Perhaps my body isn’t ready. Last week I was cleared for “soft foods” like eggs. This week I was cleared to try seafood or shellfish. Next week I’m supposed to try chicken and turkey, the week after pork and beef. The thought of all that stuff makes me want to drop dead. Honestly all I want is cold water, a fruit smoothie and fresh fruit but my plan doesn’t allow fruit yet. Since I’ve been feeling sick my doctor told me to go back to liquids.

The first month after surgery is by far the worst. It gets so much better after that. Just hang in there, and it will get easier.

You sound just like every other noob right after surgery. Everyone has buyers remorse and they question the decision. It’s too late now, you can’t get that 80% of your stomach put back in. Now you have to learn to live with your new stomach. It will get easier it just takes some time. Be grateful you have lost so much weight because eventually the weight loss will stop.

Well, as a RNY instead, I do still have my stomach, I instead asked my surgeon to make it largely non-functional. Does this give me a leg up. on sleevers? I'm not certain it does. At 6 weeks if I regret something it is the fact that I never feel full and never satisfied. I take in what I can, stop after designated amounts, try to keep all my counts proper, sufficent Fluid, adequate Protein, pray that my still meagre liquid diet is providing me sufficent calories to keep me until another day. But my skin is now dry and leathery, my lips are perpetually cracked, I keep ingesting Vitamins, minerals, omeprazole, Zofran and Carafate, is it benefiting me or just something to keep me busy? I do not looks forward to losing my hair, although it is probably inevitable. Obesity was slowly killing me, but did I merely trade it. for malabsorption, dehydration and a deficiency diet? Is there any. guarantee I have not jumped from the frying pan into the 🔥? I know of no other bypass veteran in my city of 20,000, I had to travel 50 miles to even find a bariatric surgeon. I have not seen him since shortly after my surgery, I am palmed off on Nurse-Practioners now, nice enough people but are they giving true consul or merely mouthing the company line?
Walking the walk? I do try but when you are light-headed it's not very easy. Try to keep my exercise at the level I don't pop tendons, rear ligaments, these muscles and. bones have to last the rest of my life. Have already repalaced a few joints, but they are 85% as good as the natural thing. I do not know if I have buyers remiss but at this point I do question the outlay of my insurances monies for this operation. I now have 7 small scars, was it the right trade-off? I have sacrificed myself but have I improved life, health and my future? At this point, IDK, I just don't know.😪💦😪

I hear what you are saying. Now I have a huge medical bill that I will never be able to pay off. I lost 110 pounds but have since put 20 back on. Was it worth it? I think so, I don’t think I could have lost 90 pounds on my own. At any rate, I wish I had done things a little differently. However, hindsight is 20/20 as they say.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
