Hello I'm a newbie here

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone my name is Christian I'm 38 years old and I reside in Manhattan, New York. I've been overweight all my life but on may 16th of 2018 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with no complications, hypertension and high cholesterol, so that day I made a decision to change my life and start loving myself... I quit drinking soda and drinking any type os sugary drinks, instead I drink water.. In fact Water is all I drink now and I stopped eating Chinese takeout and eating more homemade healthy meals. I've chosen to VSG surgery because out of all the other types of Bariatric surgeries vsg is the best in my opinion. I haven't started the process yet which I was told will take 6 months but I'm already covered by my insurance so that's a good thing.. On September 11th I have a follow up with my pcp on that day i plan on starting the process for vsg surgery, I wish all of you the best in your journey if anyone likes they can follow me on instagram@vsg_redemption vsg_redemption_BkOqDOGHZuO.jpeg vsg_redemption_Bl1UEKBnzv1.jpeg vsg_redemption_BmB1JNBnUI2.jpeg vsg_redemption_Bm9_TJ3lWaJ.jpeg vsg_redemption_BnHn7XdlHvF.jpeg

Welcome Christian. I am going through the pre-surgical regimen. As of tomorrow I have 2 months left before my surgery will be scheduled. Good luck (you won't need it, it's not too bad). I wish you happiness. :)

For me the process from initial consultation to surgery was around 9 months. This straddled two deductible insurance years. There were cost all along the way beginning shortly after the initial consultation. But the majority of cost was at the time of surgery. So this may influence your start date.

Hi Christian! I am a newbie as well! Congrats on the big changes that you have already made-soda was the hardest thing for me to give up (though I confess, I still have a little now and then). Good luck with everything:)

Thank you! And [emoji1366] hello 8 gave it up right away not thinking of the withdrawals and let me tell you I've never done drugs but I've seen addicts get withdrawals and I felt like one the first few days without soda omg I was shaking, sweating and so upset mind you the refrigerator was full of cans of coke but I never touched not one until last week when I opened one and when I was about to put it in my mouth I poured it down the sink because I don't want all this hard work I've done to be meaningless.

Just hearing the can pop makes me crave soda and you poured the whole thing down the sink-you are my hero!:)

My surgery is in November so I am not going crazy but still "living it up" while I can. :D

Gee! Thanks! But you should be your own hero... I'm tempted daily because my family loves poison.. I mean soda [emoji23] but I gotta think of my health here. Good luck on your surgery I don't know when mine will be I figure next year but I'm very optimistic

Wow, Christian! You have already accomplished so much! Hooray! I too decided to give up soda pre-op. I am occasionally tempted to try it again and I am always sorry. Like sugar, for me, some ALWAYS leads to MORE. I am learning, slowly but surely. All best wishes to you as you continue to move toward improved health! May your happiness know no bounds!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
