Catheter duting surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Ia m curious if either of you ever had a catheter during surgery before that they told you about? If you guys did have a catheter, did they take it out before you were awaken from anesthesia? I can do a catheter on all my patients but I sympathize with them because I personally dislike them, they are quite uncomfortable, and that is if they are skilled in insertion.

Hi, mine was placed while I was sedated but removed when I was awake. With everything going on I didn't care that much about it honestly, but the removal was quick and pain less.

Okay well that makes me a feel little better. I guess it really depends on your doctor. But I would have thought it wouldn't be needed, especially since you cant eat or drink anything the day of. But my surgery is August 1, 3 more days, yikes!!

Thanks guys

I had one for all my abdominal surgeries and my revision to RNY.

They took mine out about 6 hours after surgery until I was alert and ready to walk. Never felt a thing when they took it out, just pressure but no pain. And it’s very quick.

I had a drain before in my abdomen and that was a mind f**k lol

I had none for my WLS. I have to imagine I had one for my plastics bc I was under for 8 hours, but I wasn’t aware of it so they must have done it while I was out and removed it while I was out too.

Hey,

Sooo, now I want to know about your drain ugh. I had liposuction in 2015 and I had 6 drains, my doctor just cut the stitches and pulled them out without warning lol. But it didn't hurt, just felt very weird. How did the drain feel being pulled out cause it was actually in the stomach. Was it painful or just a weird feeling? Did the nurse or doctor pull it out? When did they pull it out, how soon after surgery?

The drain wasn’t for my rny.

it was for an ovarian cystectomy. Wasn’t painful, just felt weird and long. Physician’s assistant pulled it out. They pulled it out the day before I was suppose to be discharged and it was about 48 hours after surgery. They did an open surgery on me and not laparoscopic cause I had two huge ovarian cysts

I just had surgery on Friday 7/27 and no catheter. I went the bathroom shortly before surgery, and surgery only lasted a few hours. My hospital stated they don't feel the need for it (but I could get it if I wanted it. Good luck with your surgery!

I hope I get one. I'm getting a DS so that should take 4+ hours. It would be nice when I wake up to not have to get up to go to the bathroom.

I was cath'd, but I didn't know it until I needed to void after surgery when the nurse warned me it might hurt due to them having cath'd me while I was under. I'm pretty glad they did it while I was unconscious...

I had a catheter that was inserted while I was sedated and taken out later that evening after surgery. It hurt a little (burning sensation) but mostly just felt really freaking WEIRD. The drain, on the other hand, hurt like hell coming out one week post-op.

Yes, mine was put in and taken out while I was under!

I have been cath'd . I do not know what kind of adhesive they use for that thing but it took alcohol swabs to remove it. Adhesive remover did not work and it pulled each and every hair under it.

The last time I went under, I asked them to shave my leg where they were going to put the stabilizer, but they just left it off. It was so much more comfortable that way, as long as the tube was not pulled by anything.

My surgeon said no catheter, they just have me pee several times before surgery.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
