Sleep apnea-cpap at the hospital

Hi all. Having sleeve done Tuesday. I have moderate sleep apnea. Hate the cpap. Very claustrophobic. Don’t wear it all the time. Does anyone here have sleep apnea and had to bring cpap to hospital day of surgery?

I have sleep apnea, but do not use a CPap. They kept my head elevated in the hospital. They should go over it with you in your preOp appointments. My assumption is that if u use one, you will be expected to bring it, but I would ask.

Just reread your post. While you are under during surgery you will have a breathing tube in place that keeps your airway open making the cPap unnecessary until afterwards, but always ask for confirmation .

Yes, I was asked to bring my C-pap to the hospital. Oddly enough, they never had me use it. It won't hurt to bring it, though.

Do you have a full-face mask or a nose-only one? If you're feeling claustrophobic, your respiratory therapist needs to re-evaluate your setup. Be honest about your phobia (I have the same phobia). You deserve to be listened to and to be given what makes you feel comfortable using.

Hi there. I have a full face mask and am a mouth breather. Respiratory therapist told me there are no other options as the others go over your nose and you must keep your mouth closed to use them. I’ll bring the mask but I’m hoping maybe they can just give me some oxygen or something instead of my having to wear the mask. Thanks for the reply.

I use a nasal pillow mask, super light and only one strap. If you keep opening your mouth while sleeping there are chin straps that you can get to keep your mouth closed while you sleep. I had to switch to the nasal pillows because the latex and materials in the regular nasal mask were making my face raw. I only had to take my mask and hose to the hospital and I only used it at night, upside they were able to give me breathing treatments with the CPap so I didn't have to be bothered while I was trying to sleep.

Hi Heather. I’ll look into the chin straps. Yes. The mask makes my face raw as well. I just hate using the darn thing completely.

I took mine. They may use it in recovery room if you are really sleepy. Personally I hate wearing the machine, but I think it is helpful after surgery from the aspect that part of recovery is doing the deep breathing. The machine basically forces you to take adequate inhalation.
