4 months post surgery and still can’t eat very much

So it’s been a while since I last posted any questions on here but I think it’s time. I’ll be 4 months post surgery at the end of June. I’m currently weighing in at 259lbs with 40 more pounds to go to reach my goal. Working out has been great even though I’m chronically sore all the time. My issues are that I still can’t seem to get enough Protein in daily. I’m still drinking a Premiere Protein Shake every morning and I try to eat a healthy lunch (mostly Flame Broiler mini chicken bowls with brown rice and veggies). It takes me 2 hours to finish it. But by dinner time I’m lucky enough to get 2 or 3 bites of food in before my stomach starts hurting and I’m nauseously full. Is this a normal occurrence or should I be worried that something is wrong with my gut or am I just being a dork? Thanks for your input!

I was sleeved two weeks before you. It sounds normal to me. I definitely can't get all my Protein in without supplementing of some kind. My stomach capacity is only about two ounces. I'm honestly grateful I have this level of restriction. Do you have to eat the whole mini bowl at lunch? That seems like a lot to me, and by your description like you're forcing it down.

Man you lost quickly! I am not far as far along as you are and I still don't eat very much at all.

Almost 7 months out and barely making 600 calories a day. And only meeting Protein with a shake as Breakfast. I personally like the restriction still being what it is. My nutritionist says it’s totally fine to still be doing a shake, as long as it is once a day.

I would say rice for a lot of people post op is very filling and can cause discomfort. Perhaps eliminating the rice component would help? Like a chicken and broccoli dish no rice? That’s my only thought. I can eat 4 pieces of the kind of sushi that has rice and be done-zo and super bloated. But that’s just me.

Yes I think you are right try without the rice. I can’t do noodles either.

Rice expands in the stomach, I can at most eat a tablespoon with my Protein, that is why you can't eat your protein at dinner, the rice is taking up valuable space you need for the protein.

Just sharing something my doctor told me, stop eating after 30 minutes, even if you haven't finished what you think you should be eating. I am not sure if others have received this same guidance. I think I would be sick too if I ate for 2 hours straight!

I didn't receive these instructions from my Dr., but they make sense to me. I stop eating when I'm full. I could keep eating as the food goes down, if it's a long meal or I could keep going back to it. But that seems to me to defeat the purpose of my sleeve.

Yeah I needed to supplement for a full year. Even now (almost five years out) I supplement a couple days a week. I can’t do rice though it makes my stomach feel awful.

That is exactly what my surgeon said - defeats the purpose of the sleeve. So I do 3 meals a day and a Protein snack in the afternoon as I am working out 60-90 min a day right now. I need the extra boost so I don't feel sick.

Well, i don’t eat continuously through the 2 hours. I’ll eat about 1/4 to 1/2 of the bowl in a half hour and stop and then like an hour or so later, I’ll try to eat more. I guess sometimes I do graze through it. But I’m going to try the 30 minute and stop thing. Thanks SleeveinIL

Im a year out and can now finally eat a decent meal. I would try to skip the rice.

My strategy has been Protein and some kind of veg. I can now eat about a 6 ounce steak and a small amount of veg and feel pretty good.

If i eat starchy stuff like rice it makes me feel way to full and then hungry again in a short time.

But for the first 6 months i was worried i would only be able to eat a couple ounces of food at a time for the rest of my life which would suck because i am doing these fitness bootcamps 4 times a week and without the calories they are super hard.

      Just wanted to give an update. I've been really busy lately with work and my husband had recent surgery. I was off work last week and taking care of him, amongst a nice visit from my mom.
      I'm getting super close to Onderland! I keep teetering around 201-203lbs. Its been this way for the last two weeks.
      I went shopping this past weekend for fall/winter clothes. I am officially no longer a plus size woman. I wear dresses every day, so it's crazy to say, but I hadn't bought any pants since I was a size 20. I only replaced my pants once from a 26ish to a 20 and then I just bought size 12/14 jeans this weekend  And I'm wearing a large in tops (previously a 4X) . It was such a surreal experience going in and being able to shop in this HUGE section of the store. Although, I'm learning, no matter what your size, clothes are still hard to shop for. I thought size would open all these wondrous opportunities, not so much LOL.
      Basically, I'm keeping busy and keeping my mind healthy. A part of that is I'm not hyper focused on the scale. I get more comfort from the NSV anyways.
       I hope to be online more this week

        I'm glad everything is going well on your end. Family first, always and of course, but we do miss your presence here. Congrats on your clothes shopping! I recommend to not go overboard, since you are still losing and will probably be much smaller by the time it gets really cold.

        Way to go!

        @macadamia thank you :) I am being careful not to buy too much, but my weight loss has slowed substantially. I'm not losing 10lbs-15lbs a month like I previously was. I'm lucky to get off 5lbs a month now. Not to say that I wouldn't lose a size after a couple months, but it's not as rapid. Plus I buy all my clothes from Marshalls and TJMaxx (who's return policy is practically forever), so if they don't fit when it gets time to wear them... then I'll return them for store credit to buy new stuff.

      Stall is finally broken and I am losing again. Stalls suck but I understand them much better now. I am still feeling great and have kicked my workouts up a notch. I went to an arm/abs class that turned out to be all men and "me".  The dudes walked in with their 30 lb hand weights and I have my little 7.5/10 lbs and I was thinking to myself...what did I get myself into, and am I going to embarrass myself?  Well I decided to stick it out and although I couldn't do everything the dudes were doing, I did a pretty darn good job of keeping up and I am proud of myself for being able to stick with it. I decided I am going back again tomorrow and I am going to kill it again. I belong there too!

        Good for you! I'm still on 3lb weights :( But, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. I'm glad you're feeling so well and able to work out so much! I'm sure that's really taking the inches off!

      The whole time I kept having a nightmare I wouldn't lose weight after all this. How horrifying to have it come true. I had surgery on the 8th. I haven't lost anything since. i drink my water, my protein shakes, I walk, but nothing. How could this be happening. Am I just doomed to be overweight forever? I am beyond devastated. Maybe something changes in the next couple months, but I am no longer hopeful.

        Calm down. You're still very swollen. Many doctors advise against weighing the first month because it can be very disheartening. Everyone heals at different rates. Just keep with your plan and you'll be ok. I promise, the scale will move soon - and BIG! It can take a full month for all the abdominal swelling to go down.
