Hydration issues after surgery

Recommended Posts

So I’m finally home after the surgery and I can’t drink the recommended amount of Water the doctor has ordered me to drink without experiencing pain. How does one keep up with hydration in light of stomach pain? Any tips?

I too have a hard time drinking the recommended amount of Water daily. I am 5 days post op. its 3 in the afternoon and I am still on my first bottle (24oz). I infuse the water with lemon, orange but have to take tums for the acid reflux. so i switched to cucumber & mint and that helped. i bought myself a light up water bottle to remind me to drink smaller sips more often - that's the only way I know how to drink the recommended amount and for it not to hurt. Good Luck.

Are you drinking too fast?

Not at all. I take limited, slow sips. The Water usually feels like rock going down, then there’s no feeling. But about 30 seconds later I get a shooting pain on my right side. It’s making me not want to drink. Ugh. Same thing with my full liquids - yogurt and cream of chicken Soup.< br>
Doctor said everything looks great, X-rays, blood work, and I had no soreness when he pushed all over my abdomen. He said keep going slow on drinking and eating and it should go away. I see him for my first follow up on Tuesday.

Try a warm beverage. I use light hot chocolate, which has some Protein and is 25 calories. For whatever reason that goes down much easier than anything else I’ve tried. If you think volume is an issue you can also sip from one of those little 1 oz medicine cups and even set a timer between sips (1 sip ever 5 mins for example)

Today is my first day back on my Protein Shakes and I got nauseated and I’ve barfed so now I’m back to only Clear Liquids for now

How does the bottle light up? Does it somehow correspond with how much you’re drinking?

I had to dilute my Protein Shakes the first 2 weeks and drink them at room temperature. I usually took a premier shake, put it in a 20 oz bottle, filled the rest with Water and shook it. Hang in there it does get easier

I just said this in another thread but my surgeon had me sipping 1 ounce of liquid over 15 minutes those first few days. Try that slow sipping and see if that works.

I got it on Amazon & it syncs w my Apple Watch and reminds me every 10 min to take a sip - then I can see my progress.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
