Things to take to hospital?! Smoking Qs

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

My surgery is on 28th Feb and I’m very excited but I’m not sure what to take to hospital. I’m having it done privately so they are going to monitor me for up to 5 days especially because they’re removing a gastric band from my stomach too. Any advice on what I should take other than the essential clothes and underwear etc?

Also, I’m a social smoker - so when I’m drunk I will smoke a few cigarettes. I went away last month for a few days with my friends and we were drinking and I had a few cigarettes and we were in Amsterdam so I smoked a bit of weed aswell. Prior to this I smoked on average maybe 1 cigarette a week.

I haven’t touched anything to do with smoking for around 5 weeks and will be 6 weeks on day of surgery. I don’t consider myself a smoker as I don’t smoke alone or ever even keep cigarettes on me.

My appointment with my anaesthetist is coming on Wednesday and my plan is to explain the situation to her regarding the cigarettes. Any advice or anything about this? Should I not tell her?

Thanks :)

Hopefully your group isn't as strict as mine. They will nicotine test patients right before surgery and if you have any nicotine in your system them your surgery is postponed. I'm not personally a smoker so I'm goid, hopefully it goes well for you.

I think you should tell her, but I also think you’ll be fine! 6 weeks quit is plenty of time, my doctor only required 4 weeks (and I struggled the first week so it was more like 3). He was ok with it and my surgery went off without a hitch!

Hope your procedure is smooth and recovery is quick. See you on the other side :)

I think I would tell her, it would be much worse if they tested you for nicotine and have it show up after you didn't tell them. Better safe than sorry in this case for sure. You are having major surgery and you want all the breaks you can get. As for what to take to the hospital....Gas X, chap stick, loose clothes. I would make sure that your clothes had snaps or buttons so you don't need to put your arms over your head to get dressed. Bring something comfortable for the ride home. Good Luck and keep us posted on your Journey.

Nicotine is out of your system. Since your just a social smoker, its probalby gone in 3 or 4 days. A regular smoker up to 3 weeks.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
