cure for skin/fat roll irritation?

Recommended Posts

All - not to share too much but while in hospital two nights the skin under my spare tire got seriously irritated. It's all red, angry and itchy. Doc's office has me watching to make sure it doesn't get worse, but in the meantime, does anyone have a miracle cure? Normally to prevent I dry carefully after showering and apply anti-chafe gel (monistat). Not sure what to do to get it back healthy tho! I'm pretty miserable. Incision pain is minimal but this itching is crazy! Almost tempted to take my pain meds (that I don't need for pain) to try to subdue the itching

When you are sitting or laying put a thin cloth under your belly. Skin to skin contact. I dont know about the chafing gel for that, because of it being irritated. I used cornstarch, make sure you are completely dry as it will cake and get nasty. But a makeup brush to apply? I would ask the dr. Maybe hydrocortisone cream?

You might want to ask for a prescription of Nystatin powder. It works fast. It is all about keeping the area dry whether it be from bathing or sweat. I hope it clears up soon!

I second the nystatin...or try your monistat powder, it's common to get fungal infections in those dark moist areas. Hope you get some relief soon!

Hibiclens soap...like they give you to take a shower with before surgery. Give it a good scrub with a washcloth and let it sit there for five minutes. Then rinse well. Very important to rinse it all off. Dry thoroughly. (Ok to combine this with powders, ointments, etc.....but when you wash it use Hibiclens)

Chlorhexadine in Hibiclens is used as a presurgical scrub..it's wonderful for bacteria and yeast, in particular.

Most pharmacies and bigger chain stores with pharmacies will have Hibiclens.

LOL, document the crap outta it. Take pics. Send them to your doc. Tell them hoooooooowwwww miserable you are. Then repeat as often as possible so that there's documentation down the line for skin removal surgery. :D Hope you feel better soon!

After it is clean and dry, I use Aquaphor. You can buy it at CVS, Target, lots of places. It feels like vaseline, but it protects your skin from moisture and stays better than powder. My doctor says, it's like you get diaper rash. Diaper cream works, but it's white and messy. This is clear but protective.

I originally used nystatin powder as well. But powder won’t do anything to heal the already irritated area. I used Lotrimin cream (prescription) because it soaks into your skin. Best used when you are going to get sweaty. The powder is only a preventative. Also! My doctor recommends jock itch spray. But the same active ingredient in that is the same in foot spray as well, Tinactin. They charge more for jock spray because men will pay more for spray used on their manhood. But buy the food spray and it’s a few dollars cheaper.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
