My surgery was yesterday morning. I did lose weight prior to going into surgery so that was a plus. Surgery went well according to the Dr. Got out of the hospital around 2 pm today. I feel like I hurt more now that I am home then when I was there. Gas is going down very very slowly. I have listened to all of the things they told me to do. One of which I am struggling with today. I have had less than 20 oz of Water, a small sugar free Jello, about 4 oz of the chicken broth they gave me in the hospital and about 8 oz so far of a Protein Drink. I am drinking little sips and have been awake most of today. I am trying really hard to get their total of 64 oz of Fluid in me and 70 oz of protien but day 1 is no where near what I am supposed to do. It is slow going because it hurts if I go fast. Do I worry? Will it get better? I even mentioned to the Dr. That I thought I was hungry but she said that it was "mental" hunger.

I was the same way. My dietitian told me to concentrate on getting my Water, and not necessarily on all the Protein. Right now water is the most important because you do not want to become dehydrated. It does get better. ❤️

Each day will get a little better. The first few days are tough, just do the best you can getting those fluids in.

I'm 2 1/2 weeks out with vsg and getting my fluids in was the most frustrating part the first week 1/2 it feels physically impossible and it hurts to get it down but 2 weeks later you will feel the difference that your able to get it down. Anything your feeling right now isn't gonna stay that way.

Day two after surgery and still struggling with getting all of the liquids in. No matter how little I swallow of Water it still keeps causing me sharp pain in my chest. I take a swallow and then wait a little, and repeat.

Have you called your doc and told him about the sharp pain when you drink? I think you should.

Thank you to everyone who offered me some suggestions and comfort that this is normal. It is getting slightly better but the Dr. Said that this pain could be from reflux. I don't think it feels like reflux. I have taken the Omiprozole for the past few days and it improved only slightly.

Congrats on the surgery. My dr told me as part of my going home yesterday from hospital that he didnt expect me to be even close to the 64oz for a couple of weeks so not to worry, just take in what can. I’m used to sipping on water/tea my whole life.. but now sipping is not the same. I can get down 1-2 oz and then I’m full. I was also told the water/broth/jello etc was part of my Fluid count. I’m keeping track how much I’m drinking at this point. Tomorrow I go on full liquids and think that may help with more Protein in my diet.

let us know how you are doing. 😊

My surgery was on the 30th. Stayed in the hospital for one night. I need now I need to drink more Water. It seems like tea works better for me. Tried Jello and it hurt. Just waiting for more air bubbles to be released so I will feel better.

On day 2 postop and even though I love to drink Water, I'm having the same experience as you. 2 tiny sips of anything and I'm done. Sip, sip, sipping throughout the day! Feeling better than I though I would.

Hi guys,

who would have thought our normal good drinking Water could change so much.. lol I look at my old water bottle and wish I could chug the whole thing for water, but as I think that my new little tummy reminds me... not now!....

i found that water and broth is working best for me so far.

I called the Bariatric nurse about the stuff I’m coughing up, and as I thought it was from the airtube down the throat causing irritation.. thick mucus with a little brown blood. It’s getting better.

i am lucky that I have not( yet) had the gas bubbles... although I am peeing out the iv fluids and have to laugh... every time I do I weigh myself lol my tummy isn’t as bloated as earlier.

my dr has us checking our temps/pulse and bp 4x a day..

i have the little pill cups on my nightstand and have 6 set out at a time, some with water, some with broth and some with the premiere Protein water.. but now seems very sweet.. so watering it down a little. The nurse said just try and drink a little here and there as the tummy allows.. seems to be working.

just a little update that I hope will help others.. #teamjanuary30th lol

Just keep sipping :) my post op diet basically had me gradually increase my fluids unti i could make the 64 oz requirement. I count broth as Fluid also, and added Protein Powder to it. Your intake will improve as you heal. Im 5 months post op and can drink a lot more at a time.

Same problem here. I’m 1 week post op and am only getting in 32 oz of Water. I just can’t seem to get more in. If I try to take bigger sips it hurts going down. I’m hoping it will start to get better with each passing day.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
