Post Sleeve 30 pound regain in 1 year

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Please let me start off by saying that the hospital listed in my profile is not correct. Despite picking my country of residence as the Czech republic I was forced to pick a US hospital.

I actually had my surgery done at the Surgal clinic here in Brno Czech Republic back in February 2016. The initial weight loss was great I lost over 50 KG or 110 ibs however over the last year my weight has gradually crept back on. For a while it stabilized at 196 ibs but in the last 3 month I have gained another 28 ibs. I can eat almost as much as friends and family with normal stomachs now. This combined with sometimes severe stomach cramps which can be insanely painful prompted me to visit my surgeon to see if the sleeve had stretched. The finding of the X ray revealed no abnormal stretching. My stomach is now apparently just under half the capacity of a normal person, the surgeon claims this is normal 2 years out. Despite this the weight keeps going up and up and I feel all the control that I used to have has totally vanished as if the sleeve is not even there anymore. The surgeon has refused to carry out any further surgery on me suggesting I should sort this all out with diet and exercise. I am happy to do all of this but I just wish I could get back that extra control the sleeve used to give me. I have attached the picture of my sleeve from a recent Xray, does this look normal? I have to admit I find it hard to believe that it has stretched by just 25% as the surgeon suggests.

Thanks

First let me say my husband had the Sleeve June 2016 and I had the RNY July 2013. I lost my weight in 6 months and have maintained the loss with a 5# up and down. He has lost 100#'s in almost 2 years. Some of his problem stems from salt and sweets. (I also am a sweet eater) We have found that with the Sleeve it seems to be harder to lose the weight. I had problems with Strictures and feel like that is why I lost so quickly. More of a struggle. Have you buy chance (don't get mad please) let some of your bad habits come back? It seems that he can and does go up and down in his weight with just a small diet change. If you want to try to get back on the loser's train. Maybe go back to your diet guidelines. We all have to fight still to keep our new lifestyle going. I am by no means one to preach at anyone because I have no room to talk. I hope this helps. And remember you know what to do!! You have done this before.

Hi,

My guy friend had weight loss surgery in Germany. He lost alot of weight and he gained all of it back 2 years later. He's not as big as he was but he's pretty fluffy and admits he kept drinking beer and alchohol. The beer and alcohol did it to him...On your profile picture it shows you enjoying or holding a mixed drink...I would highly keep beer and alcohol to a minimum.

Thanks for the advice. I have to admit I do enjoy a drink or two. I used to drink a fair few cocktails and still lost weight in the past. Do you think that despite initially getting away with it that it has caused some damage?

A sleeve should stretch to an extent, but I wouldn't think that much unless they didn't remove as much as the stretchy part of the stomach as they should have. Stranger things have happened. Have you tried logging your food for a week to actually see where you're at? Having a drink or two every once in awhile is one thing, but if it's a regular part of your life now it can add a lot of empty calories.

Also keep in mind head hunger will always be something we battle. Granted it has to be frustrating to not feel as full with smaller portions, but remember that used to get you buy. What bothers me is the part where you say you can "each as much as my friends" followed up with saying you get severe cramps. Is this happening when you're matching how much you eat compared to friends? Slider foods can make it appear that you can eat way more than you should.

Times like this it's best to sit down and be honest about a daily diet. Log everything you have in a day and find out exactly where you're at. You don't have to make it public, but don't kid yourself on the portions you're having. Meaning don't log that you had 4 oz of lean chicken when you ate half of a deep fried chicken! :D

Hi Shedo / others,

I think alcohol for sure has played a part for me however im just curious if any of you after a certain period of time had a moment where the sleeve almost turned off? If I can use that phrase, and felt you had to revert back to full manual control so to speak?

They both have more sugar and calories than you need. Try to keep calories under 200 per shake.

I was told to try to get whey based shakes.

Premiere Protein gives you 30g of Protein for 160 calories. It's my favorite now.

The caramel flavor is extremely good in coffee...tastes like a latte:)

Thank you I will check out premiere protein.

With any procedure over time it is more about food decisions than the actual procedure. You can gain weight back after any of them.
For me logging my food always helps me when I feel off track.
As pointed out by others the alcohol can add a lot of extra calories.
It sounds like you are pushing yourself to eat more...if you are eating as much as your friends and cramping then you aren't listening to your body signals.
If it were me, I would go back to the beginning. Do a couple of days of liquids. Then go back to the fundamentals of 60g of Protein and 60 oz of Water. Protein first. No liquids 30 min. before, during, or after meal. No alcohol. Reaquaint yourself with the fundamentals and then see where you are.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
