February Rny Surgeries??

Recommended Posts

I am very slowly starting to feel like myself also (except that real food sure sounds good!). Tonight I am venturing out for the first time post-op to attend my youngest son’s swim banquet. I will not be able to eat the dinner and figure I’ll take crystal light and maybe egg drop Soup so that I’m not completely slobbering over everyone else’s bbq. Funny enough, I don’t feel hungry and have to remind myself to take in enough fluids, but the thoughts of foods are killing me!

I as well have a hard time taking in enough fluids. Hope you survived the night out alright!

Ok this is a weird question, I had surgery on February 20th I go for my post op Friday where I hopefully will be moved from the liquid diet to that puréed diet. Has anyone else been craving foods that they couldn’t stand before surgery???? I have been craving tuna like thinking about it and my mouth waters, I could even stand the smell of tuna pre-surgery. (Loved salmon, whiting, flounder, etc but never could stomach tuna for some reason)!

Hey peeps I had my sleeve done Friday and returned home from the hospital today...of course the first thing I did was get in the scale. I noticed I put 10lbs back on. I believe I maybe paranoid. But I had a problem with my heart rate and very low blood pressure. Has this happened to anyone else?

My Doctor advised not to get on the scales for the week after surgery. They pump so much Fluid into you after surgery and you have a lot of swelling as well. It is normal to come out of the hospital weighing more. It should come off pretty quickly.

I am almost two weeks post op now and it did come off thankfully plus some...lol my heart rate and blood pressure is finally starting to even back out as well. Although it seems my heart rate is running higher than it was ore surgery.

So glad that things are evening out for you. I’m finding that my body is taking awhile to adjust to it’s redesigned engine. I just started non puréed Proteins a couple of days ago, and am finding it harder than ever to get enough fluids because I feel fuller for longer. Every day is a learning experience post surgery.

@k.tallent - the evening went really well. Took egg drop Soup. Really wanted what everyone else had, but the feeling went away as soon as they finished eating and the food was no longer in front of me.

Got moved to soft foods with permission to work my way into real foods if all continued to go well. I am sticking with fish and well-ground up chicken/ham at this point, but it's nice to have semi-normal stuff again! Some days I struggle with Water, but more than that I struggle with getting all of the Protein from food sources and generally have to add a shake in to get the last of the protein requirement met.

How is your progression going?

I’m on full/creamy liquids right now and I can’t wait to get to the soft foods stage lol. I haven’t found a Soup I love yet and the Vitamins are still kicking my butt and making me super nauseous. I can tolerate pudding right now and that’s about it. I find watching my family eat is harder now than any point other point far. Foods are starting to smell good again and I actually have an appetite. Bad combo lol. And I actually feel like my taste buds have changed during this process...has that happened to you?

I felt the same about Soups but also got tired of all my Protein being sweet shakes! Hang in there, eggs and refried Beans will be on your plan soon!

yes, my tastebuds have also changed. I bought seafood salad two days ago and couldn’t eat more than three bites. Used to love the stuff and now I don’t like it. If only I felt that way about cookies! I still want foods that I can’t make fit into my plan (desserts, dumplings), but at least I don’t feel hungry. That makes saying no easier.

I have three months of Vitamins that I don’t like at all! I’m looking for the time to run by my surgeons office and buy the brand they sell that tastes slightly better.

Today was my first full day back to work/kid routine. I missed my caffeine in the morning and felt tired by lunch time, but aside from that, I felt normal and fine all day. Little steps.

Yes! I am so tired of the sweets too! Looking forward to eggs, don’t know about refried Beans though lol never have liked them but maybe now I will?? It’s nice you had a good amount of time off to figure out how to run this crazy new life. I have been back to work since 2/26 and I’m still exhausted every afternoon. The mornings are easier. I have the BariatricPal Vitamins and the bariadvantage ones and neither have worked for me. It’s I didn’t waste all that money I’d be buying vitamin patches

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
