I had surgery on August 10th 2017 and I only lost 40 pounds in 4 months. I’m following the diet and getting my water intake and protein intake. So I was wondering if it’s ok to have the Sleeve done even though I had the Bypass?

Why would you want to revise from a more powerful surgery (gastric bypass) to a less powerful one (the sleeve)? I'm attempting to make sense out of it.

I'm pleased with my sleeve. However, I lost 41 pounds at 4 months out. You're 4 months out and lost 40 pounds. What do you think will happen by converting from bypass to sleeve?

I'd give your bypass a chance to work. Revision is risky business.

You want to go from a full RNY bypass to a simpler/lesser gastric sleeve??

Revision from bypass to sleeve is possible. In fact, it's been performed on a few occasions. However, revision to a less potent surgical tool is usually ineffective.

Again...No.

To remedy severe complications experienced with other weight loss surgeries...it's a rare possible option.

For simple lack of weight loss, it is accurate to say that there is no surgeon alive who would convert RNY to sleeve.

So again, No. Just No.

As everyone else is saying, not really no - and the sleeve is less powerful, not more.

40lbs in 4 months is ok but I assume from your post you are feeling despondent, wishing it was faster? The sleeve will not do that, but if you think it is too slow, talk with your surgeon?

But... 10lbs a month is a pretty good, healthy weight loss...

Tell us more about what is going on - it helps if we know your original weight too.

you're going to be hard pressed to find a surgeon willing (or capable) of doing that. They have to do a complete takedown of the RNY first - which, as I understand, is a pretty complicated surgery - and something they do only if the patient has severe medical problems with it that can't be resolved any other way. They would never do that because someone "didn't lose enough weight". Besides, there is nothing wrong with losing 40 lbs in four months. What exactly were you expecting to lose?

So ((hugs)). The standard advice on this is to quit watching My 600lb Life.

You're thinkin', "Dayum shazam! I just rearranged my innards and am eating like 200 calories a day. I should be losing more weight each week. If I wanted to lose only 10lbs per month, I coulda done Weight Watchers!!!! Gimme that cool 25-50lb per month weight loss I imagined I would experience! Cuz 10lbs a month! Dayum, I feel ripped off!!!!!"

Also, as for the surgery sequence of going from RNY to sleeve...Inconceivable (youtube clip)! I do not think that means what you think it means! I think maybe you aren't very familiar with your tummy anatomy. It's why so many have responded with a kinda sorta...WTF with a screwed up question face.

For most, the sequence of multiple WLS would be Lapband (maybe), then VSG (sleeve)...then duh duh dunnnnhhhhhhh! No weight loss or loss and regain or reflux or...CRAP! This surgery didn't work and now I need a more drastic surgery that includes malabsorption and a further reduction of tummy capacity/food restriction--which takes you to an RNY or DS. Cuz you know, you're jonesing for the magical 25lbs a month that Dr. Now's patients see...

But sadly, the reality is that your surgeon will be as happy as a leetle girl if you maintain a 9-12lb per month consistent loss over the honeymoon period. That's 120lbs in a year if that happens consistently. Which is damn skippy in my book!

The next step for a more drastic surgery than you have right now is to go from an RNY to a DS (duodenal switch)--which put simply, include even further malabsorption. And you are sooooo not there yet!!!

So keep on keepin' on and sip, sip, sip, chew, chew, chew. Don't eat around your surgery and follow the rules from your surgical team, and you WILL lose your weight!!!! ((hugs))

I haven't had my surgery yet; due Jan 12th, but my surgeon told me that the weight loss doesn't always happen straight away. Your body just went through a massive traumatic surgery. It's still adjusting and healing. I bet in another 4 months you'll see a huge difference. Speak to your doctor about your concerns but, honestly, give your body a chance and yourself a break. It'll work [emoji4]
