So I’m to start my liquid diet on 11/13.. 3 weeks out from my surgery date. With thanksgiving coming up, I feel I will be tempted to “taste” foods that I won’t be able to have for a while. Has anyone out there ever slipped on the pre-op liquid diet phase? I’m thinking that one day really won’t affect me because I will have a few days to get back on it. Thghts?

My surgeon said any solid foods (other than my 1 yogurt/day) during the 7 day preop period will disqualify me for surgery. Other surgeons may not be as strict but mine is. I don’t know how they would know you ate but I don’t want to chance it. I’ve waited a long time to get my surgery and I don’t want to do anything to risk losing it. I am having a family pre-Thanksgiving meal on the 10th because I am supposed to start my preop diet on the 13th, surgery on the 21st. That will give me plenty of time to enjoy the Thanksgiving yummies and use the bones for broth for my Thanksgiving dinner.< br>

Have a great day!

my surgeon told me to stick to the preop liquid diet as close as i could, but it was ok to eat a solid meal if i really wanted it. She also said i could eat a final mean the day before surgery so long as it was at least 12 hours before surgery and i drank some Water the morning of. I had a delicious bowl of Pasta the night before surgery.

Overall by sticking to liquid meals at least 2 out of 3 means per day i was able to lose 12 pounds in the two weeks leading up to surgery.

My two cents/though for whatever it's worth....

You are doing this for your health.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I was told the pre op liquid diet is to shrink the liver for the surgeon to have better access and view to the stomach for surgery.

We are all adults. It's your decision to give in or push through the temptation.

Best of luck to you,

Jenn

I’ll be having broth for Thanksgiving this year, I’ll be 16 days out from gastric sleeve. Hopefully going to start my new year right.

My surgeon's requirement is to lose 10 pounds during the two week required liquid diet...although his liquid diet includes four cups of lettuce (2 tbl of low cal dressing) and two greek yogurts. I'm determined to do this 100% correctly. But I get the temptation for Thanksgiving dinner. I'm the one in my family who makes the dinner (my stuffing is killer) and we have 20+ people to my house for a huge sit down feast. My surgery is on Nov 21 so I will not be tempted this year for sure and clearly not in any mood to cook or have guests. So I've told my family "I'm out...see ya at Christmas!" I've been to 44 Thanksgiving Dinners...I plan to be at least 44 more...so missing this one will be just fine. :)

It's not like you will never have thanksgiving again, seriously - how many have you had already in your lifetime? Do you distinctly remember every single one of the past ones?

The pre-op diet is to make it easier to lift the liver, as the stomach is right under it. Be brave, be strong and do what you are supposed to do.

Good luck.

Im lucky my sister in law is cooking this year for my daughter and my mom, she’s making me broth and tea. I usually just stay home and cook for my mom and little girl.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
