Psychological evaluation ! What to say ? What not to say ?

Recommended Posts

Psychology is not a real science IMO. I am not saying therapy can't be vaulable, but history proves psychology/psychiatry has been wrong more than right. I don't believe personality tests are valid science either. I hope my appt does not have such a test, as it then becomes part of your medical record forever. You don't take one to get any other surgery.

There is no personality test. They basically want to make sure you have reasonable expectations of what you want and that you are aware of the needed lifestyle changes and are working towards them. Psychology is a very new science, but the evaluation they do is less about that and more of whether you realize how drastic the changes will be and how are you making adjustments to handle them.

Actually, you're wrong. There are many surgical procedures that require a psychiatric evaluation.

I would love to see your sources that "prove" psychology and psychiatry having been wrong more than right throughout history. That's such a laughable statement to anyone who is even slightly familiar with how scientific discovery works. Where is this information? Being a scientist myself (and yes, psychology IS a science), I prefer to deal in scientific fact. So, may I ask, where are your sources to the so-called facts you've proposed here? May I also ask what qualifies you to make such blanket statements? Are you a scientist? That last question is rhetorical, considering how blatantly obvious it is that you have zero background in any scientific field.

@Abeille213 Not taking the bait to be your sparring partner on this or any other topic.

Just an FYI though, I am educated in a science, one that deals in logic.

lol I'll take that as a very clear admission that you have absolutely zero sources to back up a single word you claimed to be fact. Imagine that! No wonder you're afraid of that personality inventory being in your record! lol

Glad it went well!! I teach psychology and even I was nervous about the idea of an evaluation!

My doctor recommends that, post surgery, you be put on anti depression meds to cope with the changes. You may not realize you are acting differently. Sometimes due to weight loss, the hormone changes can play a number on your balance.

Thanks, I'm already on antidepressants. My therapist and I will reevaluate after surgery to see if my meds need to change.

I have been through one of these when I had my lap band done in 2005, so when my friend who had the sleeve told me that she didn't have to have one, I was shocked. Now she's 6 months out and is 17 pounds from her goal weight and is struggling with the mental feelings related to food and curious why she still is looking for the comfort in eating. She stated that she made a mistake by not going through a supervised program, and that she was being impatient to get it over with, not that everyone needs this, because she feels that there are a whole slew of emotions that are not cropping up as a result.

The program that I am going through is very strict, and because I'm a lap band to VSG patient made me go through all sorts of extra hoops because you're considered a failure by the insurances companies, regardless of the reason for the change. Even though my time was extended, I am glad that I had to take a few extra steps to get to where I am now. I am more ready than I've ever been and am excited for what the future holds for me along this journey.

Sorry for the long winded post, but I think that it's important to hear others experiences as well. My suggestion to you is to be honest. There is no right or wrong answers, and if something comes up, they'll help you to get through the issues and move forward. Good luck!

Psychiatric Considerations of the Massive Weight Loss Patient

Psychological Assessment of the Patient Undergoing Bariatric Surgery

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3096263/

And given all the other medical journals and science books written that they source their information from, it sure as hell does look like a real science to me.

Blanket assertions with zero proof, though, is not scientific. And your subjective "logic" isn't science either.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
