My Doctor's say the week 3 stall isn't real...

Recommended Posts

Looking for opinions, I have been following my post op diet with no cheating and I though I was doing well.... True I lost 14lbs at week two and have been stalled for 2 weeks but I assumed it was the dreaded 3 week stall. Now at my one month appointment I am told that the week 3 stall isn't real and that this is my fault for sure (not my words). What is everyone's opinion on the legitimacy of the week 3 stall?

No offense, but it sounds like your doctor is full of it. Follow your plan, meet your Protein and Water goals, and the scale will start to move again.

Regarding the stall in general, my sister and step dad are both body builders/weight lifters who are very well versed in nutrition. Stalling (aka plateau) is very normal. It's your body's way of adjusting to the new you before it realizes your not done changing. Quote from my sister "our body is stupid. It has no idea what we are doing or why and it's goal is to stop us."
I've never heard of a dr who didn't know the body well enough to believe the stall.

I have been the same weight (was actually up a few pounds-PMS) and I have NOT cheated.

I hit ALL my protien goals, my carbs are very low and I surpass my Water goals.

I take my Vitamins and have moved a lot.

Mom just getting home from vacation, literally now ( was perfect on vacation) and hoping being home in a more normal routine will break it.

My three week mark isn't tomorrow.

I normally wouldn't say ignore your doctor, but I will here. Just keep doing what you are doing and your body will catch up.

update- I just weighed myself on my home scale and I'm exactly the same as when I left one week ago. Which means I may be down and pound or so in the morning. I usually weigh myself as soon as I wake up- when I'm my lowest. So I was stalled all week. I wasn't completely sure bc I was away and when I made it to my in laws, she had 2 scales. one scale had me 4 pounds UP 😱 And the other had me at about the same...

Thank you everyone for the responses! It is definitely scary to here some who is supposed to be an expert on wls say that the 3 week stall isn't real, also concerning when you feel like your doing everything you can to succeed. I found that this situation played on fears I didn't even know I had making me think the surgery was a failure and that I'll be stuck like this forever. I cannot say how much I appreciate everyone's prompt responses and the encouragement, it has greatly helped to put me at ease!

I just had my 5/6 wk weigh-in yesterday. I feel like I am at a plateau, which the NP says is normal in weeks 3/4 and 5/6. After a 24 lb weight loss thru week 2, I was so disappointed in my minimal loss moving forward. My total loss to date is 31 lbs. I am trying to stay positive and continue moving forward eating correctly-hopefully, I will set start losing faster again soon! My husband has to remind me, slow wt loss is better for the long term and keeping it off! 3 lbs in 2 weeks x 26 was would be 78 lbs in a year, which w/b amazing!!!

I'm at 5.5 weeks, the past week and a half I've been up and down the same 1-2 pounds. It's driving me crazy. I'm also upset because I go to my doc next week for my next check up and I feel like it's going to look like I've only last 6lbs since my last visit [emoji20]. Make me look bad and it's depressing too. I just have to keep doing what I'm doing

Hitting plateaus is a natural thing that happens every few weeks for some. Your body is adjusting to changes.

When I used to work out 2 hours, five days a week, my body would get used to the food or exercise, so I'd have to change it up.

This is different, it's okay too. Just stay the steady course and I believe the weight will drop again. If the plateau lasts, perhaps call your nutritionist or dietitian and ask her what you can do.

And, I think the doctor is being nasty. I hope you can find someone whose more sensitive to your needs.

I'm pulling for you! Wishing you much success!!!

Your doctor is an idiot.............wait did I say that out loud? My apologies, but not t your doctor, to you for having to listen to that. My 3 week stall was me eating 800 calories a day and not loosing one pound for 20 consecutive days. I weigh twice a day and have it documented. You will find a lot of people with a 3 week stall. Yes, it is true. Doctors are people and trust me when I say, I have dealt with my share of Dr idiots. My initial pcp Doctor that I had been seeing for about 15 years told me he would not recommend the surgery and that he knew that a lot of people have problems with it. So very glad I did my own research and found KNOWLEDGEABLE Doctors who actually knew their stuff and admitted to me that it is a struggle to get other doctors who are not in the field to understand what bariatric surgery is and what it does. We have to take responsibility for our own health and our own health care decisions. The best to you.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
