Post Op Recovery Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi! I've been here checking out the posts for a few months now, but just now decided I'd join in and create my own account. I'm 25 years old. I'm 5" tall. My highest weight was 220, surgery weight 191. I finally got sleeved on Monday January 30th. My surgeon said that my surgery went perfectly and that everything looked great. However I do not feel great AT ALL.

When I woke up from surgery (around 6:30pm) I was unable to keep my eyes open until about mid morning the next day. I just could not stay awake. The pain was so much worse than I expected. They had me on morphine and I was still in so much pain that it hurt to breath and hurt to speak, and nauseous.

I didn't have my first walk until about 6am the morning after my surgery and I wasn't able to get myself up without help from the nurse.

They finally stopped giving me the morphine yesterday afternoon and started me on another pain medication that I take every 3-4 hours.

I haven't had anything except some Water and Popsicles. I was able to drink about 26 ounces of water yesterday. The water feels uncomfortable when it goes down even though I'm careful to not swallow air, but I'm afraid to try the shakes because I feel like it'll hurt more.

I feel slightly better today but it's still very difficult to get up and down. I'm hoping to go home today, they told me if I can get in a liter of fluids today that I'll be able to go home.

With all of the research I did and YouTube videos I watched, and looking on here I did not expect this at all. I see most people are up and walking hours after their surgery, and some even say they aren't in much pain at all, only discomfort.

Is there anybody else that can share in my experience? Have any tips? Or maybe even an explanation for why my recovery has been so rough? I've had no previous health problems or surgeries.

Don't panic...you're only on day 2 and there's going to be pain. Everyone's pain tolerance is different. I've had a couple of kids ;) pain doesn't frighten me. And honestly, if you've never had any other surgeries, you may not be accustomed to this kind of discomfort. Hang in there. Take your pain meds like clockwork.

I spent 2 days in hospital for pain and low potassium level. I had 1 dose of morphine and told the nurse "NO MORE TOO STRONG FOR ME" Went on oral meds and never was able to really take in anything more than room temp Water. Pain is subjective and it does indeed hurt to have your flesh cut into. You're going to be fine! Don't lose hope. Take your pain meds on time for the first several days and just drink your fluids as best you can. You're going to get through this. I'm 16 days post op and feeling much better. I'm on pureed now and you'll get there too. No pain meds for me for days and days now and had my gallbladder removed too! Hang in there! :)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
