Stressed about a dress! Help!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

So I had my sleeve put on back on 11/22/16. I was married back in April of 2016 and our wedding reception is in April of 2017 (it was a fast wedding due to my husband adopting my boys so we couldn't put a party together fast enough last year). I'm starting to stress out SOOOOOO bad over something to wear! I'm thinking I won't do an actual wedding dress but I still plan on going to David's Bridal and getting a similar dress (just fancy and white).

I thought my weight loss would make a huge difference where April (5 months post-op) would be some type of reveal for me. I don't look like I've lost any weight and feel stuck. Any women have experience with this type of issue or a similar one? I don't know if I should go now to pick out a dress and have it altered closer to, or if I should just wait period. I don't want to wait too long where I can't get it altered. What should I do???? I'm so upset over this :(. I am patiently waiting for the day that I can feel the change in my clothing but I'm in such of a time crunch!

I have the gastric bypass on 11/9/16 not the sleeve, but it looks like you have already lost close to 50 pounds in 28 days. I have lost 52 pounds. DO NOT stress. I suggest you find your dress and then have it altered closer to the date. You will be a beautiful bride and believe me everyone will notice the weight loss

My friend is getting married in March. Most of the bridesmaids got measured in October. The bridal shop advised me the latest possible date was December. I was sleeved in September. In October I was a size 20. In December I measured a size 16. I ordered one size down and was told if necessary it could be taken in an additional two sizes. This month I should be getting my size 14.

Part of me is worried I'll have to be greased into a size 14 and the rest is worried I'll be swimming in it by March. There's no real easy answer for dress shopping. Go to the shop, discuss your options with them because they will be able to give you a far better timeline for ordering and an idea on resizing

If you're worried about dropping more weight for the big day perhaps you could begin going to the gym more frequently, assuming you're not there every day to begin with.

I've lost 33.4 pounds since 11/22 and almost 50 since August and I'm very grateful for it. I just wish I could see it more :(. Thank you for the kind words!

I set my appointment up today to go to David's Bridal on 2/4. I'm hoping to get someone very helpful that can help me with sizing down if necessary!

Depending on where you are in your weight loss journey it can still be hard to tell a difference in the beginning. I started at 317 pounds, I have lost 31.5 and can tell no difference, but I know in the past with weight loss I have to lose about 75 pounds before I can really start to tell a difference.

I have lost 55 lbs, and the first 35 only a couple people noticed. I'm going to go against the grain here and suggest waiting to buy a dress until more last-minute. David's has TONS of nice stuff off the rack, and you aren't necessarily looking to get a bridal dress, just a pretty dress.

Go to the 2/4 appointment and try on everything you like, ask the questions about tailoring and easiest styles that can be taken in, but I'd hold off buying until early March. The scale sometimes doesn't move, but the inches shift around. My body is shaped differently than it was before at this weight. I lost a LOT of my butt, am used to having tons of gaping in my pants and always wearing A-line dresses. You don't know where you'll be in another month or two.

And, yes, David's will give you the hysterical scare tactic that they need months and months to get a dress in and have it altered, yada, yada, yada, but everyone I know who has gone there has gotten their stuff in within a month. It's a national chain, so you could always have it shipped from another store or drive to the other location to pick it up.

Most dresses can be taken in up to two size without losing shape.

Congratulations!

May not be a popular option or available in your area but have you looked into renting your dress? It sounds weird I know.

I rented mine and liked it. They had a ton of different mix and match styles. They could easily switch the sizes around too. Renting a wedding dress isn't for everyone because some people want to keep their dress. It is sentimental. Just wanted to put that out there.

Good luck and I hope you find something wonderful

I am with the wait to get the dress camp. But I'd suggest going to Nordstrom if you have one nearby. They can do alterations in a one week turn around. :) They have some beautiful wedding style dresses.

Not sure that I have much to offer in terms of advice about dresses since I'm only 24 pounds down, but I just wanted to say congratulations on your celebration and congratulations on your weight loss!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
