Am I eating too much?

Recommended Posts

I'm two weeks post op and just finished the liquid diet. Currently allowed to eat yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, cheese sticks and cooked veggies.

This morning I had a yogurt and cheese stick which I ate pretty slowly. Later on for lunch I had roasted cauliflower like 4 little heads. For dinner I had the same cauliflower and had a little more than the lunch portion (about 7) and around bedtime I had half a yogurt.

Is this too much in a day? Now that I'm off liquids idk how much I'm supposed to or not supposed to eat

I was given the plan of 2 oz every 2 hours for a total of 5 small *meals* a day.

@@chewbug26 -- You need more Protein. Focus on it before vegetables. Cottage cheese is highest in Protein on your list, then cheese, including string cheese (if that's what you mean by "cheese sticks"). This is per serving. I can't say anything about quantities for sleevers. You can check with your practice to be sure.

@@WitchySar -- Did you mean 2 oz? I'm mentioning the typo only because some people may take it as gospel or be confused.

Eep! Yes, 2 oz. I have fixed that. Thanks for noticing!

I think the problem might be that you aren't weighing your food. I will get my sleeve on the 26th, and once I'm off the liquid diet my plan calls for 2 ounces Protein (eaten slowly, small bites), followed by 2 ounces low-carb veggies (again, slowly with small bites), then, if I'm still hungry, 2 ounces of fruit, and only after that, 2 ounces starchy veggies. I practiced this for a couple of weeks so that I would be used to it and it is pretty hard, but doable. The main thing is to never allow yourself to get hangry. Once my hunger gets to a certain point, I think 'screw it, I'll eat what I want' but if I'm taking in enough liquid and Protein, I don't get to that point and I can follow my plan.

My nutritionist and doctor never gave me exact instructions on how much to eat. They were only strict about the liquid diet portion so I'm a little lost. Only from reading these threads, I'm now aware that I have to get more Protein in. But at the same time they told me to stop the shakes after the liquid diet portion was over. I'm just a little lost

At your stage, it is very difficult to meet protein goals without supplementing with protein in some form. I would check back with them and ask about adding protein to your cottage cheese, yoghurt, coffee, etc.

P.S. to my note above (5).

Greek and similar drained yogurts are very high in Protein. I didn't mention them before because I don't think of them. IMNHO, they, unlike Meryl Streep, are highly over-rated. (A 5-6 oz cup of "regular" yogurt contains about 5-6 g protein, less than cottage and other cheeses.)

I have found a cheese made by Cabot brand, it is sharp extra light cheese. It has a lot more Protein than most, and the fat is lower. It's a pretty good cheese, I eat it for a snack!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
