For those of you who did not have "food funerals":

Recommended Posts

Not at all. What's to regret? I now wear a size 8 jeans, I've been at a healthy weight because of surgery for 3.5 years and have regained my life. I can run, dance all night, climb sand dunes with my family, do mud runs, shop in any store I please, wear high heels without pain...

Why would I stuff my face one last time, only to add to the weight I wanted to turn around and lose? I ate enough food in my 40 years to fill MORE than my lifetime share. Now I can still eat whatever I want, whenever I want, I just eat a small portion and enjoy each bite instead of just shoveling it in mindlessly.

Life is great. No food funeral needed. Besides, food isn't dead, no reason to mourn it and definitely no reason to Celebrate it.

This ^^^^^^

The food is not going anywhere. No need for funerals.

The surgery is not magic, either.

If you don't change your thinking then you'll struggle with weight forever....post op as well.

Now is the time to be getting your mind wrapped around a new lifestyle...not being concerned over specific foods. If you don't fix your thinking then the surgery is simply a colossal waste of time and money.

And this ^^^^^^^

I DID have food funerals, and I regretted it. It didn't make me feel any better, and it just pushed me further from my goals. food isn't going anywhere. :) We are breaking the old thoughts of food and reshaping a new view that doesn't center on celebrating food. it's so dang hard. But we can do it. I'm 3 weeks post op today.

So friggin true! I'm happy to hear you regretted it. Not in like, a bad way? Hopefully it makes sense. Basically, I know I will. And just like you said, it'll push me farther from my goals. It would essentially feel like I'm starting over on Day 1. I'm really trying not to cheat. It's definitely hard. But just as you said? WE CAN DO IT! Congrats on being 3 weeks post op! Has it gotten any better since having the surgery?

It has! I am hungry, therefore I need to nourish my body so I eat. But I don't sit around and pine for food. I keep myself busy anyway with my sewing and geekery! This has been the best decision I've made, and I'm saying this having had to abstain from most of the holiday food this year. I wish I had done it sooner, No regrets whatsoever. :)

I didn't name it, but for the two weeks or so between setting the date and starting the pre-op diet, I ate whatever I wanted. I wouldn't say I binged, but I ate foods I wouldn't eat on my 90-day pre-approval diet and haven't eaten since the surgery.

What stood out to me, and still does, is that it was just not a big deal. So I ate a couple slices of pizza - it takes just a few minutes, it tastes only so good, and then it's over. It just isn't worth it. It's a mild, momentary high.

So I don't regret it, and I do still have some of those same cravings, but i don't act on them, in part because I remember how I satisfying acting on them actually is.

I did the "food funeral" thing. I don't regret it, but now that I am 4 months post op, I see it wasn't REALLY necessary because like LipstickLady said, you can still have that stuff, you are just eating a small, small amount of it. Before I would would EASILY eat a dozen chicken wings...now I can eat FOUR. So I can still eat the foods I love, but the quantity is practically nothing. Now with that being said, my relationship with food may be COMPLETELY different than other peoples. My biggest issue was Portion Control, and that is exactly what this surgery has finally given me. I don't eat tons of junk...I ALWAYS eat the Protein first, but i do STILL occassionally have a bite or two of cake...but that's literally all i can have. The horrible feeling of overeating with the sleeve WAY outweighs the pleasure I get from eating the food, so i know when to stop now. At times I miss the "overeating"...not gonna lie. But again, like LipstickLady said, being able to wear jeans, boots and heels again WAY outweighs that!!

Surgery is Jan 31! So eventually after the first 6 months or year you can eat normal food but just maybe 2 to 4 Oz?

I can eat regularly now, 4 months post op.

One thing to consider, though, is that certain foods are very calorie dense relative to their volume (think potato chips, which you can chew up so small), or foods that move through you quickly (such as ice cream, which liquifies and passes through your stomach fast). You can consume a lot of calories with these foods even if you don't eat much of them, and even with your smaller stomach you can consume quite a lot of them. Also, you can consume a lot of calories if you graze, and with a slower metabolism, you could put on weight even if you ate half what a normal person is supposed to eat in a day.

I could eat a potato chip, but I choose not to. Maybe that's a permanent change, maybe not, but either way I just don't miss it, and I keep those foods out of my house. food just doesn't matter anymore, a frame of mind I couldn't imagine before.

By the time I reached the point that I was having WLS I'd had 20 years of "last suppers" and I'd been on hundreds of "start on Monday" diets and I'd allowed my self to stuff my face all day after I ate one off plan donut at a 9am work meeting deciding i would "start fresh" in the morning.

Apparently I did learn something during that time because I refused to look at WLS as a punishment. During the pre op classes I also became aware that I wasn't saying goodbye to food forever. Honestly, I didn't even think of having (another) one final, never going to eat like this again, absolutely the last time, blow out meal .

I reached my surgery goal weight in Oct. I have a Premier Protien shake for Breakfast, high Protein low fat lunch then eat whatever I want for dinner. food funeral, nope. I've been bouncing between 2 & 4#'s below surgery goal weight since end of Oct. I weigh daily and enjoy my food. I know once my pre-op diet starts I'll be no longer having the things I eat for dinner for about a year. It's not forever ( I constantly remind myself of that). I may not even like most things I like now after surgery and if I do eat them it will be in very small portions.

I know you're asking if those who did not have food funerals regret it. For about 4 of my 6 month pre op period i went into last supper mode and I do not regret having done so. I'm not encouraging others to do so just my experience. At 6 months post op i am officially 80+ lbs lost.

@@UnkemptCaptain, no regrets at the time and no regrets seven years later.

Before surgery I had planned to do a few "last suppers." It occurred to me, however, that one or three more pig-outs would mean nothing. Eating one more half-quart of ice cream, for example, wouldn't warm my heart weeks or years down the road. It's not meals and food that we remember. I think I can safely say for 99% of people on Earth, the skinny, the obese and the in-between, that no one daydreams about what was on the brunch plate on the third Sunday of February, 2015. People may recall feeling sick from gorging, but what they gorged on becomes notably unimportant.

It's people, activities and emotions that become indelible memories.

I doubt Jesus overate at his true "Last Supper". :)

Not only that, when He ate with the disciples after the resurrection, He stuck with grilled fish and whole wheat bread. ;-)

When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” John 21:9-12

Was that meal "the last brunch"? -I'm going to rot in hell. :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
