1 wk out can't finish all the protein

Recommended Posts

Hello! My surgery was 12/5. I am at the clear liquid and Protein Shake phase. However I am having a seriously hard time getting the required Protein. The doctors packet says one 20g scoop to 4 Oz of milk or Water. Even if I mix with water it's sludge at that mix. I tried anyway as its in writing and I got so ill and dizzy, I almost went to the ER. Since then I have diluted to a tolerable consistency (similar to milks consistency) but to get the required 60g would take me two days to drink sipping non stop which goes against the idea of learning to have small meals and small Snacks spaced out.

Obviously I will consult my physician on Monday but I wondered what everyone else's experiences were with the protein. How did you get it all in? What did your doctor's suggest? Any thoughts are welcome!

Since I'm only one week out I'm still early in healing.

Have you tried the premade premiere Protein shakes? I like chocolate, caramel, and strawberry best. They have 30 g Protein each and so I had one for Breakfast and one for lunch. Also just know it gets easier to get the protein in as you heal. I don't think I was getting all of mine in during week one.

Concentrate on staying hydrated and getting fluids in...then Protein at least the first several days to week.

the first week is almost impossible to meet everything. Your stomach is still swollen and inflamed and there just isn't enough room. You wind up having to choose between fluids and Protein. Pick fluids. You don't want to get dehydrated. In week 2, things will calm down and you'll start to be able to meet your Protein requirement.

I wish I knew that, I made myself crazy that first week trying to meet my protein goal and I wound up dehydrated and needed an IV - not fun.

You're doing great, keep up the good work. (and eww, get rid of the sludge drink haha)

I use 8oz of Fair Life milk 13g of Protein with my JBN 25g Protein Shake and a little ice works out to 38g protein 10oz of liquid 3x day. 1 20oz propel . I find the more I walk the easier everything goes down

Thank you for that insight! I appreciate everyone's comments but that's how I've felt. Like defeated that I can't get it in. I'll heed all the advice.

I have one more concern. Each day I seem to be able to consume more and more broth/water and went from a 1/3 of the popsicle to over half. I don't want to ever stretch my tummy out. I get nervous that being able to eat more is not a good sign. Am I crazy lol? I guess I just don't know what a "normal" size meal will be once fully recovered. Maybe I'm being dramatic

You can't stretch a sleeve. If you add 1/2 scoop of unflavored Protein to your cottage cheese and yogurt you will increase the Protein to almost 20 grams per 4oz,

I am about 7 weeks post surgery and can eat about 3-4oz of regular food. At first I didn't know when to stop and felt sick now I am eating really slowly and fell full about the same time I get finished.

OFF TOPIC:I am posting from m Disneyland we are flyer no home tonight. I've walked almost 38 miles in the past five days. The scale better show that on my weekly weigh in!

@@Aggiemae thank you! I will make sure I try not to exceed 4 ozs. Maybe it's because it's a clear liquid like apple juice so I don't get the full feeling as fast? With my shakes I fill super fast. It's just the clears that I tend to lack that full feeling with. But I will make sure to monitor so I don't stretch anything. Lol I imagine it will! That's a tooooon of walking!!!!!

You will not stretch your sleeve. It doesn't stretch.

Is apple juice on your plan? I can only have 25-30 grams of carbs a day and a glass of Apple juice has 28 grams.

liquids don't make you fell full because they go right through the sleeve.

I don't think I met the Protein goal until late the 2nd week. And then it wasn't consistent until late the 3rd week. My surgeon made it clear that the most important thing is to stay hydrated, so focus first on getting enough fluids in, and the 2nd most important thing is Protein. Just do your best. There are clear protein options like Isopure and Syntrax nectar (some flavors) that can go down easier. I ended up freezing Syntrax Nectar Roadside Lemonade into tubes like ice pops to get both fluids and protein down easier the first couple of weeks. Just keep at it, it does get easier!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
