The best gift from my surgery was working on my inner self. I am honestly happy and making up for lost time. So many other positives.

I can't wait until I can make up for lost time. I didn't realize how much my weight was holding me back until I put the focus on it and made the decision to have surgery. Now I can't wait for the new and improved version of me.

Being excited to try new things we took for granted. I'm biking 30-50 miles on weekends, I'm hiking mountains, and going to the gym 6 days a week.

That is awesome! Did you start exercising right away or did you wait until you lost a certain amount of weight? You look great!

I am a much more active participant in my own life.

I run the dunes with my kids instead of watching them from the bottom. I sit in the best seats DEAD CENTER of the theater for their performances instead of snagging an aisle seat where I have more room. I enjoy the experience of shopping instead of dreading the fact that I probably won't find something that fits. I take my time at the market instead of wondering who is judging me by the contents of my cart. I've stopped wasting time at WWs meetings, weighing and measuring all foods obsessively, researching the "latest and greatest" diet. I ZUMBA with enthusiasm instead of kind of doing my thing at the back of the room. I network at conferences all day instead of sneaking up to my room for a two hour nap. I don't care if my hair/make up/clothes are perfect when I run to the store -- I actually run out in yoga pants and a t-shirt if I need to.

I've taken back small things in my life that slipped away without me realizing it as I gained weight. I live in a much more carefree manner without worry that my bulk was hindering me physically and mentally.

It's awesome.

The biggest thing that has changed in my life since surgery? Simple, the fact that I actually HAVE a life now!

Instead of dragging myself into work, leaving and getting fast food or takeout on the way home and plopping my fat ass on the couch watching tv until I fell asleep - I now LIVE and DO THINGS!

I take a walk at lunch at work, hit the gym after work a couple times a week (3 or 4). I go out and do something almost every weekend - tour local botanical gardens, festivals, the zoo etc. Last week I was on vacation in Tennessee and walked miles every day sightseeing including hiking 5.5 miles at steep elevations in the Smoky Mountains one day. A year ago I was in constant back and knee pain and couldn't walk a city block without gasping for air and having my legs about to buckle. Now, I'm enjoying life!

You also asked about starting exercise now or waiting until you drop some weight. Start NOW. No matter what size/fitness level you are - there is some sort of exercise/activity you can do. I started with just a little pedal exerciser and some resistance bands at home last january. When I had my surgery in June - i was walking 30 minutes a day plus had a weekly fitness class (run by a doctor who designed it for obese patients) to concentrate on core exercises. The idea is to start wherever you are at NOW and gradually increase. There is no need to wait until you've lost X amount of pounds.

Best of luck on your journey! Great things are ahead!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
