Are you losing weight in different places than before surgery?

Recommended Posts

Like many sleevers, I had years of roller-coaster dieting (down 40, up 50 etc) before opting for surgery. On those pre-op diets I'd lose weight in a specific order: first my face, then waist, and lastly thighs. But post-op it's different. I lost in the face, yes, but then most of my backside and hips, and some off the thighs. This is the first time in my life that I've had a flat butt (I miss it). My waist meanwhile is still thick with an obvious layer of fat (not just skin). My arms are still dimply, too.

Has this happened to others? My cardio is less than on those pre-op diets (where I would overexercise, often 3+ hours per day) but I'm doing ab/core work daily in addition to regular cardio. Eating a lot less carbs and sugar than pre-sleeve, of course.

Sounds about right. Face, then my rear-end. I keep looking at this flat backside in the mirror in can't believe it.

I'm bypass, but heck, surgery is surgery.

I was shocked at the order my weight came off. After college, I gained about 22-25 lbs. to a whopping 145. ( spent a lot of money eating out for lunches and dinners post-grad, and likely drinking too much MGD!!)

Of course I was mortified! Lol. Three months, cardio and step classes and it was off. It was typical top down loss, with the thighs being last.

This time, it was very evenly spread , so no one area lost first or most. I was thrilled the legs went down quickly!

Now, I'm left with this "pad" of fat just above the waist and above what would be a butt if I had one left.

I have the same amount to get to goal as I did way back after college 22-25 lbs. and I know where every last ounce is sitting.

Crunch, plank, lunge. Repeat.

Wow, guys, thank you for affirming that it's not just me dealing with this! I wonder if it's our hi-protein/low-carb diets causing this pattern (of bodies holding on to abdominal fat and evicting our behinds), or something to do with the surgery itself?

It is weird seeing myself Apple-shaped. Even though I'm happy to have lost weight, I don't like this new body shape.

Here's a 2012 analysis suggesting that bariatric surgery (of all types) does change body shape, but opposite to what we're experiencing: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3307505/ Those authors conclude that patients lose a greater percentage of abdominal weight - becoming more pear-shaped instead of Apple-shaped.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
