The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.

Your protein requirement is met by a combination of the protein from your meals combined with the protein from your supplements (protein shakes, protein bars). As the amount of protein from meals increases, especially if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you will have an option to reduce your reliance on supplements. I went from 3 Protein Shakes a day, down to 2, then 1 and finally zero when my meal volume increased to 1 cup per meal at a year and a half.

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery!! After you have your surgery you aren't going to feel like eating, so the Protein shakes will be fine. My surgery was on 8/23 and I did shakes until week 3, after that I did a combination of pureed and soft foods. Some of the hardest things for me was not being able to drink things quickly, you have to take small sips I'm Italian so much of my social life is centered around food, the mental battle has been difficult but feeling free of the weight keeps me going. Good Luck!

Here's the thing, after surgery you will actually have to force yourself to eat. You wont want to. The most important thing is to stay hydrated then when approved to add Protein shakes back in, you will need to.

Wait until after surgery to figure out which Protein shake will work best for you because your tastes change dramatically and everything tastes too sweet.

since my surgery on 8/23 I have lost 27 pounds. I started off slow the first 2 weeks because I was not getting enough Protein, on week 3 I think I dropped 8 or 9 pounds. Everyone is different, follow the plan they give you and you will be fine, plus you are male and you will lose more quickly. Don't push yourself with the exercise at first, wait till about a month out to lift, etc. Good luck Thursday!!!

I have to be there at 10:30am. I am nervous about the surgery but is in God's hand I'm just tired of the shakes LOL the thing is that I dont like sweet things and I feel that the shakes are tooooooo sweet for me. I have tried it with Water, with milk and they are sweet but im just going to stay strong.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
