Well- definitely NOT covered

Recommended Posts

Was hoping that the new insurance coverage we start on Oct 1 would POSSIBLY cover a little bit of plastics- nope. Not even on the case of rashes. They are VERY specific! Guess it's out of pocket all the way. Good thing I'm a way off from it lol. Time to save!

@@LisaMergs Mine's very specific too. Explicitly states it doesn't cover skin removal as a result of weight loss.

I think I'm going to start a political lobby. Seriously. I need something to do- that is meaningful and has impact. I've been excellent at rallying groups and troupes on the past for a myriad of things. Why not this???

Off to begin research....

I'm in the same boat, Lisa. I'm hoping to get mine done next year, but it'll be tight coming up with that kind of cash in one lump sum.

WLS and it's related expenses gives us a whole new perspective on having to wait patiently. But still, I count myself extremely lucky that I was able to have the RNY for a total of $250.

OK, that sucks.

They seriously don't cover speech therapy for kids, though? Wtf.

Mine doesn't have mental health coverage, though.. I shouldn't be surprised.

Yes, I was really surprised to see they don't cover speech therapy for kids.

My husband started with the company back in July. He's the #2 guy there, right behind the COO, and believe me, I will be all over this once he is further settled in...companies can choose what they want covered, or, in this case, not. I'm not happy with this...

Yes, companies have the choice on what exclusions to be added to the policy, unfortunately with the skyrocketing policy costs (especially with the implementation of ObamaCare) they have been forced to add more exclusions, higher co-pays and deductible just to offer reasonable cost coverage that won't affect their bottom line. With that said some companies will offer a different tier coverage for upper management.

Mine didn't cover my plastics either... It has very strict guidelines like the pannus must hit below the pubic bone (mine didn't) and things like that. Rashes, etc didn't change that.

I'd be attaching weights under that pannus to get the required droop!

I was out of pocket for my sleeve... $11,111. What does a full body lift usually run?

I was talking to someone who had the RNY and she is ready for plastics. She said to get everything done - all around the world TT, arms and boobs costs about $35,000. She thought it was going to be more. Uuuummmm...Any good plastic surgeons in Mexico? LOL!

I have my consults Oct 5. I need to get a handle on the costs.

Thinking by next April I can start.

Husband couldn't care less if I had anything done. But I know he won't let me take money from savings to pay for it- so it's all going to be on me. Hrupmph.

I think I'll start with the girls

Ouch. Which area was the most painful? I've been reading about something called a reverse Tummy Tuck. Have any of you heard of this? Apparently it's for people who have the most skin above their bellybutton and what they do is create an incision under each breast and pull and lift the skin up this way. The pain after and recovery from this procedure is supposedly much easier than traditional. They can also do muscle repair at the same time.

You don't need a new bellybutton created for you and often times they can use some of the leftover fat or tissues to create larger or fuller breasts. Again, this is not for people who use excess skin is below the belly button. There are a select few plastic surgeons in the country that do this procedure, but the knowledge of it is becoming more widespread.

I am right there with you and let me tell you, when that weight comes off and you realize that all that loose skin is pulling on your body, plastics is a must. At least for me it is. I started with a 5950.00 Brachioplasty and I just took a 19 week project to cover the cost of my Abdominalplasty and breast lift with augmentation. That surgery is going to cost around 18K total.....

I started my new project yesterday and I swear as every hour goes by I have a secret smile on my face knowing that I just paid for part of my surgery.

I think it stinks that insurance does not cover any of it. For Peres sake, obesity is a metabolic disease. And guess what, it is a disease that can and will end your life early. Why then is reconstruction not covered?

I just simply don't agree with that.

As I sit here all trussed up in my Spanx that hold my tummy in.......

It is BS and it needs to change.

Just my two cents......

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
