Done with surgery! Lots of pain :(

Recommended Posts

Hi all! Surgery went great, made it home yesterday evening. Pain is terrible!

Unfortunately it's not gas pain, it's surgery pain.. so there's not much I can do to make it go away :'( other than just let time pass, and take my pain killers!

Has anyone experienced severe pain after their surgery? Was there something that helped you get through it? How long does it usually take for it to go away??

Thank you all for your support, and I hope everyone is doing great!!

An abdominal binder really did wonders for me by providing needed compression at the incision sites. Also a large body pillow that I could wedge between me and my right and left sides when I went to sleep. Do you still have a drain inserted?

Hi!

An abdominal binder sounds interesting,I will definitely check it out!! Thanks so much!!

The large body pillow wouldn't work for me at the moment, my pain is so strong that I am not able to sleep on my side :( only on my back...

No, I don't have a catheter. I'm going to the bathroom all on my own! Haha

@@Maya0417 What do you mean surgery pain? Have you been walking?

Hi Kristen,

My pain is coming from where the surgeon spent most of his time operating. Where my stomach was taken out and stitched together. Gas pain spreads out, and usually focuses on your back and shoulders. My pain is solely coming from my stomach, under my stitches.

I'm walking as much as I can, to try to minimize the pain. Unfortunately, it's not doing much.. and still hurts me, a lot.

Maybe try a heating pad (not directly on skin) and see if that helps. I know others have said the abdominal binder helps - just be sure to use your spirometer frequently as the binder can sometimes restrict you from taking deep breaths and could result in pneumonia. Hope you feel better soon.

I had exactly the same experience, and I know how hard it is to remain optimistic with that pain. After the first few days it subsided enough that it was only really bad when I was changing position.

I tried the binder and found it to be uncomfortable because it restricted my breathing but the support at night was the only way I was able to sleep comfortably so I did use if for a few nights. Otherwise I basically pressed into that incision with an open palm when I was switching positions and that helped.

It was bad, no joke. But I can't stress enough to keep moving. As odd as it sounds I went back to work (pre k teacher) at 15 days and I was literally in tears the night before because I didn't think I could do it with the pain - but apparently it was the best thing for me because it's 5 days later and by my third day at work I realized I am not in pain at all. Now at 19 days I feel normal!

So I don't know if it's the moving or what that helped speed along the recovery of that poor beat up muscle but I have to assume it was because it was the only thing that changed.

I was literally sitting on my couch going for short walks and running little errands when someone would drive me and now it's like nothing happened.

Keep your eye on the prize. I know it sucks but better things are right around the corner.

Did you get one from your surgeon or did you have to get one for yourself, and if so, where can I get one?

I bought mine on Amazon but I believe cvs, rite aid and Walgreens all carry them. Or look for a pharmacy that carries surgical supplies

Hang in there. It's rough for the first few weeks, but you'll be surprised how quickly time goes by. Before you know it you'll begin feeling like yourself again. In the meantime rest, stay hydrated and get plenty of sleep. Good luck!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
