How to quit sugar ?!?!?!?

Hi Everyone,

I can honestly say I did not get to my current weight by eating large quantities of food. I got this way because I eat the WRONG foods! Even though I love vegetables and I do eat them, I eat WEIGH (ok, way, just a play on words), too many sweets! I truly believe I have an addiction. Just the thought of sweets make my mouth Water, and my mind stays focused on them until they are consumed. I can eat sweets until I physically feel ill. So, my question..... What have you all done to break your addiction to sweets? I meet with the dietitian next week, for my first consult. I want that to be my starting point of bidding adieu to candy, Cookies, ice cream, etc. I really need some help here!

Go Cold turkey - if you eat any - you'll just crave more. Also I highly recommend counseling. I went for emotional eating and found it extremely helpful. I agree with having alternatives always handy and removing the sweets from your house (or at least out of your vision). Try sugar free popsicles as an alternative.

I usually agree with @@KristenLe, but I will disagree at this point. This is one of those areas when you need to withdrawl slowly. Why? There are so many chemicals in processed junk food you will feel like complete crap if you stopped cold turkey. I figured that out when I started my diet Mtn. Dew and junk food clean up. It really took me three weeks to get this stuff out of my system. Just saying.

How were you able to do it OKCPirate? I also have to detox from Diet Coke. I went off of it for about a week and I felt miserable - almost felt like anxiety. I do know the artificial sweetener in the Diet Coke only fuels the sugar addiction.

I had a heavy Diet Coke fixation and quit cold turkey 3 months ago. Other than about 5 days of a low-grade headache, there haven't been any issues. I've totally stopped using caffeine.

Plus, now I'm actually tired at bedtime, and I don't need Ambien. WIN/WIN.

I've tried a few sodas, but now fizzy drinks just make me feel bloated and sick. Which is actually a good thing... no temptation in going back to soda at all.

I agree with @@OKCPirate about weaning yourself but really you need to think about WHY you love eating sweets so much and why you love the feeling they give you. That will help you stop eating them. Sugar is just like any other drug the way it works in your brain. The fact that you are addicted to sweets is attributed to something else. If you can figure out why you are so intent on eating them and solving that issue, it will be easier to give up long term.

For me, I had to quit cold turkey. I was physically sick for a couple of days. I literally threw up every time I would start a diet that included no sugar. I will have sugar now(well, not now bc I'm 4 weeks post op) once in a while but pretty much is clean eating the majority of the time. Diet Pepsi was my love. I quit 2+ months ago when I found out I was not gonna be able to drink it post op. It was hard mentally but I never looked back.

I put the dang stuff in a jar every day and made a mark on it, a little less every day. It was really that bad. But when you do it over three weeks, it's not horrific on your system. But I sure as heck felt it. It's not just sugar, or caffeine, there is something in all that junk food that you really get addicted too. Well at least I was.

I quit all sodas (Coke person here) cold turkey. At the same time I also quit coffee. I did eventually end up drinking coffee again but I haven't drank soda since May 2013. I do occasionally have squirt or Coke mixed with vodka or tequila but haven't drank soda since then. Good luck.

I am also addicted to sugar and all simple carbs. I love Cookies and potato chips and bread. I went totally off simple carbs after my Lapband surgery for quite a while so I know that when you get them out of your system, the cravings slow way down. This time I went off them before surgery by allowing myself as much as I wanted of a replacement. I make a Peanut Butter cup type treat with stevia. It has lots of Protein (and fat) but very few carbs. Yes, artificial sweeteners can trigger cravings but it was much easier to wean down from the stevia than sugar for me. I'm down to one a day and will go to a half soon. Not having trouble with cravings. Today I had to pick up muffins at a bakery for work. No temptations.

The good news is that your taste buds change after surgery.. well most people. For instance, my wife was the biggest sweet eater and now could care less. I on the other hand, didn't care about sweets before and now I find myself craving sugary things I never liked before

I'm in the same boat! Sweets are (were) my life! And anything that would turn into sugar in my body like bread, Pasta, etc...

My advice. Take out all sweets that you maybe holding hostage & give them away to friends or family (if opened) and the others you can give them away on sites like Free Cycle or Craigslist. Tell yourself this... "I can look twice as good as those Kit Kats (or whatever it is) taste if I don't eat them." It takes 21 days to break a habit.

Another thing that helped me was creating a shopping list before I went to the grocery store. I would ONLY purchase what I have on the paper. Eliminate the middle aisles... They are the DEVIL! Everything that you need are on the outskirts of the market. Notice veggies, fruits & meat are always on the far end & yogurts, almond milk etc are on the other end. Everything in middle is hogwash... Junk and poison for the body. Try to avoids those aisles as much as you can. Eat more fruit!

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
