Trouble staying Hydrated

Recommended Posts

I'm five months out and until recently I was really hydrated and now it's becoming increasingly hard just to reach the minimum of what they ask. I feel dizzy and light headed all the time now. It's making me not want to eat because of how easily my stomach gets upset now. I'm starting to lose control of my body. My doctor told me it's the heat. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get hydrated faster?

Many things qualify for you daily Fluid requirements. They include the Water you drink when you take your Vitamins. Also the Water or milk in your Protein drinks. Also the water in Soups. Some people find that they can tolerate Hot Drinks better than cold and others find the exact opposite. For me, I like cold drinks in the hot summer and Hot Drinks in the cold winter. Generally for me water lost its flavor after surgery. But I found that drinking flavored water such as Crystal Light, it tasted better. Lately I found a drink called Bai in Sam's Club and I buy it by the case. In the winter, I found that tea (fine English teas) were good, also Decaf coffee. In the winter I like hot cocoa. I use only the "No Sugar Added" variety.

Any kind of Fluid counts:

Water

flavored water

Soups

SF pops

coffee

tea

crushed ice

tomatoes

watermelon

milk

fruit juice

Set your mind to getting your fluids in, Then pull up you big girl panties and DO IT!

You know what you have to do. You are five months out, friend. Same ol'/ Same ol'. Nothing new or fancy.

Make getting your fluids in your #1 priority. If you don't, the ER will.

Feel better. I care about YOU.

I developed a habit of drinking an entire bottle of room temp Water first thing in the am. I hold that bottle in my hand and drink and drink until it is gone. Then I will typically grab another that gets me through until lunch so by noon I have a good 48 oz. in me. I never get dehydrated that way and to your point I don't get that nauseated feeling that comes with dehydration.

It is one of the successful habits I created a few months after having bypass and I carry it with me. I will say that while traveling, I don't do as well so I have to be mindful.

All great suggestions here! My trick is actually smaller glasses or bottles - like 8 oz. I feel that is easy to drink fairly quickly and then refill. Somehow it doesn't seem as daunting to me to get down 8 - 8 oz portions as it does to get down 4 - 16 oz portions. Also, first thing when I wake up, I try to drink 8 oz before I even get out of bed. (Actually been slacking on this one lately but now that I mention it, I want to really push this one again. It gets me started off right.)

I ordered a Water bottle from MyHydrate.com. This bottle keeps track of each 8 oz. that I drink, by lightning up. When I finally get all eight buttons lit up, it plays a congratulatory melody. It also chirps in an hour if I've not taken a drink. This bottle has helped me to stay on track with keeping myself hydrated.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
