August Bandsters How are you Doing So Far

Recommended Posts

My doctor said sometimes it can take a little while for a fill to kick in. (although 4 weeks is a long time)

Some people say they are tighter in the morning. Maybe that's the case with you and the reason you couldn't eat later was because you were irritated after the stuck episode? Maybe try something hot to drink (tea/coffee/etc) before your next meal to try and loosen things up.

I got my 1st fill yesterday in my 10 cc band. He did it under fluro and told me to watch the screen and he explained everything to me. He is just the greatest (Dr. Steinberg, Atlanta Georgia). He 1st numbed me, stuck the needle in (it just felt like a pinch) and put 2 cc in after asking me if I felt full all of a sudden. I didn't really feel full but felt as if I needed to burp. He wouldn't put more in for fear I would be too tight. I was told to do liquids for 2 days and then gradually add food but be very cautious with beef and pork. Well, I've already eliminated that from my diet anyway so no big deal. I had such a headache and was out of Protein Shake earlier so I went to GNC and got a 16 oz bottle of banana creme muscle milk. It was kind of sweet but had 32 grams of Protein that I needed. Afterwards I felt so sleepy and had to sleep it off. But boy when I woke up, I had energy like you wouldn't beleive it!! As far as restriction, I did eat a few fries just to see what it felt like and the only thing I can say at this point is after about 5 or 6 it felt like they were about to get struck or like a golfball trying to pass through. I hope that's the kind of restriction I should have and I hope it lasts.

Thanks for the replies. As my BF and I were sitting here trying to figure out why this might be happening I remembered that I ate some REALLLLY spicy rice just before this whole episode. My nutritionist said that I might not be able to eat spicy food because it would irritate my pouch. I am wondering if this is what is causing it. I have had it for the last two days and the meal after eating the rice always seems to be the worst. I am going to stick with liquids for a few days. Hey maybe I will go back to losing like I did on the liquid diet following surgery. Always looking for the silver lining!!!

Hi some of us have trouble with rice as it tends to ball up. Think of sushi wraped in rice. Perhaps the trouble is the rice itself or may be not, each of us is different. Something to consider.

I did consider it being the rice, but I have had rice before and I didn't seem to have any problems. The only difference between this meal and any other that I have had is the spiciness. And believe me it was SPICY. I haven't had any problems with the smoothies in the last few hours (though I have only had one), so who knows! Any one else had problems with spicy?

Actually I posted a question whether spicy foods are okay as I love them. So far, I haven't had any problems but I had my 1st fill yesterday and haven't had rice since. I did eat about 1/2 of a vegetarian pizza and I kept waiting to fill full but never really did.

wow purplegirl, I saw your pics on the pic thread...you are doing an awesome job! We are pretty close in stats....when I started all of this I was 281, when I had the surgery I was 261 and now I am 246. I was banded 8-20 so a few weeks off from you. Keep up the great work, you should be proud of yourself!

I too was banded on 8/20/07 I have lost 13 lbs that is it. I am a lower BMI and wish it was at a faster rate. I have had one fill and nothing. I have another scheduled for Monday. I have 40 lbs to loose. I guess that I thought it would be easier, was I wrong!!!

Ya but keep in mind you are starting out at a really low weight, I think you are doing awesome....I would expect it to take you a bit longer to drop. It will come though and your right, it is much harder than I thought. I wasn't expecting an easy ride but so far I do compare myself with others and their loss so far and it is discouraging

Nicole, I envy you!! I was banded on Aug 27th and am having a hard time right now staying on track. I haven't lost anything in a couple of weeks. :think

I called the Dr today and I cannot get a fill until 90 days after my surgery. I have an appt on Nov 29th. I really need one now.

Anyone ideas on how to get back on track anyone???

Hi all......

It's been a crazy 2 weeks here......lots of visitors. So, I've done a lot of cooking and entertaining and socializing. Up until this past weekend, I was really able to stay away from all things sweet and/or snacky. Up to this point, I really had no problem with either. But, I started a little cheating and I'm angry with myself. As a result---I don't feel so great....a little bloaty! What the hell is wrong with me???? Of course, I wasn't anywhere near my pre-lb eating fest behavior! But, I've been picking at the leftovers.....especially my world-famous apple crisp! And, I was mindlessly picking on some cheeses that were left over as I was cleaning up the kitchen. Then, at 9 pm last night, I ate 3 mini Almond Joys after I bid farewell to the last of my weekend guests. I need to throw myself back on track. I have an appt on Monday Oct 22.....let's hope it's fill time. If not, maybe I can just get my mouth wired shut until it is fill time.......

I'm really upset with this behavior. Please, someone talk some sense into me. I know I'll straighten up if I someone scares me with tales of terrible things happening to me.......!:help::help::help::help::help::help:

My opinion is we all fall off of the wagon every now and then but look at how far you've come and just forget yesterday. Today is a new day. I actually have built in 1 cheat day, Sundays. I don't go way off the chart but eat if I want. It worked before on a diet I was on so it should work now. Heck , one time about 4 weeks out I consumed an entire bag of bbq fritos. You're okay. Yesterday is gone, start over again.

Somehow I lost contact with other August bandsters. I have been eating things I know I shouldnt. I went on a girls vacation ate wrong and still managed to lose 3 1/2 lbs over about 10 days. I am certainly not back up to my presurgery eating habits, but am afraid I am slipping backwards. I have had 1 fill and am going in 10-22 for the second one. Hope it gives me some restriction, I feel like right now I am using will power only.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
