Is this a stupid idea?

Recommended Posts

So, my surgery is scheduled for May 16th. I'm supposed to start my 2 week diet on Monday the 2nd. My diet sounds like a really easy one compared those who have an all liquid diet.....My diet is one Protein drink and two small very low carb meals (lean meat and non starchy veggie) and of course the normal sugar free Popsicles and Jello............So I was thinking just to kick myself off to a good start I would do two days (today and tomorrow) all liquids..... and then Monday switch to my plan's diet.

I can't really say why I want to do this and maybe that's the "stupid" part.....but what does everyone think. Am I just overly excited to get started, or do you think two days of all liquids will make me appreciate my real 2 week diet even more and make it easier for me to stick to??? Thoughts?

Thanks,

Kathy

My non-medical and completely uneducated opinion is -

That couldn't hurt..

Do what you want!!

Of course, why you'd want to put yourself thru that is beyond me... ;)

But hey, knock yourself out!!!

Good luck!!!

Not a stupid idea at all.

I'd only warn that the pre-op two weeks can seem to last forever......I'd most likely live normal this weekend and then do the all liquid two-day at some point during your two week countdown.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery. Best decision I've made in decades.

I guess that's why I felt compelled to ask "if this was a stupid idea"....haha Thanks I still haven't decided but I still haven't had anything today so I can still decide either way. hahaha

Make sure you have something tho...

You'll need to make sure you're not going into your pre-op diet under-nourished...

I guess I question your sanity (not really) because my pre-op diet was 4 weeks of liquids...

So why anyone would choose to do longer is beyond me..

Having said this, I'm considering doing a 5 day liquid diet to try to kick my stall...

I know, I know...

Going against everything I've just said...

Good luck with it all...

Not that you need it...

You're all over this sh*t...

I know I'm just beginning, but once I'm on the other side of this surgery I think a few days of a liquid diet is my plan for breaking any long stalls.....So I say go for it!!! Make sure to let me know when you start so I can make sure to follow all your posts. You are extremely entertaining when you are eating "real" food and I can't imagine how much fun you'll be on all liquids!!! hahaha!!

It's not a stupid idea, but I'm not sure it's one that I would want to do myself. I'm all for intensifying the pre-op diet if you're up for it, but I question the timing.

The thing is, it's always the first few days of a newly restrictive diet that are the most hell-ish. Personally I feel that by tacking on a couple of liquid diet days ahead of your requirement, you're giving yourself the worst part of the diet on the worst days. If I wanted a couple of liquid days I'd move them to the end of the diet.

Of course this is all easy for me to say. I lucked out with a surgeon who required no pre-op diet at all, save for liquids the day before. And not even clear liquids!

It certainly won't hurt to go with your plan. I was super excited to get started, too. I was also a little concerned that I wouldn't lose the required 5% of my body weight on the 14 day preop. So I started my preop 2 days early. Mine was 3 Protein shakes and unlimited leafy green veggies. Silly me, worried for nothing.... I ended up losing 22 pounds instead of the required 12. But hey, that just put me 10 pounds closer to goal.

With all the bitching people do about the preop liquid diet, I've found it a useful tool to help maintain. I have voluntarily reverted back to 3-5 days of Protein Shakes a couple times. Not only do I lose those couple extra pounds, it tends to tighten up my restriction, clear the carbs out of my system and really get my head back in the game if I find myself veering off plan.

I say go for it! Be excited and start drinking!

It's crazy how much the pre op diets vary! I'm on liquids 2 weeks before surgery ( May10th )with a low bmi. I see so many that are only on liquids 3 days or even just the day before surgery. I eould love to eat something lean, but no can do for me.

Thanks for everyone's input...... I've decided I'm doing all liquid today and tomorrow......I just had my second Protein shake of the day. @@Inner Surfer Girl You're right, I probably am making it harder than it has to be, but on the other hand I also think after these two days of nothing but liquids, when Monday comes around and I start my regular two week pre-op diet, rather than feeling deprived, I'll be thankful for the food. We shall see! Thanks again everyone!!!

So the really good thing about doing all liquids for this two days before my "real" pre-op diet starts on Monday is it's giving me a chance to try all my Protein powders.......Let me just say this unjury chicken both flavor is WONDERFUL!!!

So far today I've done great! I've had 440 calories, 77g of Protein, 24g of carbs, 12g of sugar, 4g of fat.....but only 1g Fiber.....and 64oz of Water, and it's only 5:42......I got this!!!

I think I may go pick up some Benefiber or something tomorrow and add it to my Protein shakes.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
