I had my sleeve done 04/7/16 and I am 1 wk post op today. I was never a thirsty person pre op so I am having a real hard time with the Protein and Fluid intake.. I feel like I am drowning Protein is the hardest for me. I have tried it many different ways and can't seem to stomach it because it's just disgusting. Any suggestions?!?

Also since surgery I have had this weird feeling in my throat like it's swollen.. I can drink fine but it's sore and annoying!! Anyone struggle with that?

the throat feeling swollen is a common thing. it will feel better as you go. if the Protein Drink you are using is nasty, switch to a different flavor or brand. there are many that work just fine and taste good too! as you progress past your first week it will all get better and easier..

I agree with oldbriannnomore the sore throat thing is very common. Eat sugar free popsicles and that will help you. The reason it's so sore is because during surgery they put a tube down your throat to help you breath. When they put it down or take it out it can cause irritation. Mine lasted about a week or so. It will go away.

Aahhh yes, the dreaded liquids and Protein the first week. So, I will tell you that I couldn't get fluids down. I just couldn't do it and I ended up in the hospital for 3 days due to dehydration which is very dangerous! When I got out of the hospital I put a timer on my phone and every time my timer went off I took a drink. Once I reached my 64oz of Fluid I would stop drinking for the day. My surgeon was more interested in me getting enough Fluid in vs. the Protein. Once you get out a few weeks then you can worry about the protein but right now the fluid is the most important thing.

If your surgeon is a stickler about the protein too you can try a concoction that I made up:

8oz of Isopure ready to drink

8oz of Powerade Zero the same color as the Isopure

8oz of Water

Mix all three together and use that as your liquids. 1 bottle of Isopure has 24oz in it and 40 grams of protein. So once you make 3 of those drinks you will have 40oz of protein and 72oz of liquid in so you will have met all your requirements for the day :)

Also as the days/weeks go by it won't be as hard to drink as it is now. I was never really a drinker before surgery either so trying to get in 64oz after surgery was very difficult for me. But if I stayed true to my timer and drank on a regular basis I did fine.

Good Luck to you and know we are here if you need us!

In the very beginning, I was sick of Protein shakes due to the pre op diet..so I started drinking the No Sugar added Carnation K (as suggested by my NUT). It's not as high in Protein as the others, but I was able to stomach until I could tolerate other Protein Shakes.

Thank you everyone!!!

Kranky813 my dr also told me he is more concerned about me getting fluids and not dehydrating vs the Protein.. I just can't wait to be able to eat a meal with my family again oh and get rid of this feeling in my darn throat!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
