Sleeve surgery but not in a hospital - dr Kim

Recommended Posts

I think after carel is crucial.

How long after surgery do you stay at the site?

What happens if there is a surgical emergency?

What factors are leading to you pondering having your sleeve surgery there?

Think about it--long and hard.

Wishing only the best for you.

Prayers going up.

Why are you considering this?

I would have had no problems going home 6 hours postop, but I think I am the exception to the rule. I read so many other posts from people who can't stop vomitting, are in extreme pain, can't swallow, can't hold down liquids, etc. They stay in the hospital 2, sometimes 3 nights.

What is Dr. Kim's contingiency plan if you are one of these patients? What is his pain management protocol? How does he ensure you won't have a unexpected bleed when you get home? What if you can't hold down liquids...will he readmit you for IV fluids or are you left to fend for yourself at the ER? If it's not a real hospital with an ICU, what kind of staff/equipment does he have in case of an anesthetic emergency or if you need a blood transfusion? I had my surgery at a Center of Excellence bariatric surgical center and I did spend one night, but these are the types of questions (and about 50 others) I asked since it wasn't a hospital.

I had my surgery on an outpatient basis - In at 6:00 am out at about 12:30 pm. (I also just had my gallbladder removed in January and it was done on outpatient as well.)

The doctor gave me his cell phone number and the office phone number. We found the nearest emergency room and mapped it out, just in case. We rented a condo so I had all the comforts of home. I was very comfortable and had no complications. I was a bit concerned at first, but when I saw how many surgeries the surgeon completed on a weekly basis, I was more at ease. He performed more surgeries in 2 months than my local doctor performed in a year. The hospital didn't release me until they knew I was OK. I could have stayed longer, but honest, I felt OK and felt I could rest more comfortably in the condo.

Do your research on your doctor and hospital. Do what makes you comfortable - if you don't feel comfortable with doing it as an outpatient, find a surgeon who will go with a 1-2 day stay. Be your own best advocate.

I'm having my surgery done at a surgery center then getting transported to a recovery "hotel" overnight. I did my lap band out patient and went home within 6 hours so this was new to me.

I was Sleeved 10/19/16. My MD does the Sleeve in the hospital, but as outpatient. Patients can stay if needed, but almost all patients go home the same day.

Mine was at a surgical center. I stayed the night due to sleep apnea but for many it is outpatient.

I understand your concern. Dr Kim did my sleeve 4 years ago. One thing I know about him is he is VERY thorough prior to surgery. He requires all patients to do cardiac testing and if you have a family history of heart problems he will make you see a cardiologist. If he feels you need a sleep study he will require it. If he wants primary care physician notes on you the office will get them. He has done over 6500 surgeries and has been in bariatrics since 2003. He would not have you go to a outpatient facility if he felt you were high risk and needed to be in a hospital setting. If you meet all criteria to be able to go home, they will allow you to go home. But the criteria is strick. You are in great hands! Dr Kim truly cares about you.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
