I am 5 days from my surgery and when ever someone asks me or I think about it I can't choose a goal weight. I don't know what weight I want to aim for is the normal?

Did you all know what weight you wanted to be before your WLS? All I know is I want to be below 200lbs

Height- 5'11

SW- 320lbs

CW- 315 lbs

GW.....?

I'm 13 months post surgery and still don't have a goal weight...

I'm guessing it'll be similar to when I started wanting to lose weight...

I woke up one morning and thought "It's time"...

So I'm guessing I'll now just wake up one morning and go "I'm there..."

Don't worry too much about the destination yet...

Just make sure the journey is a worthwhile one...

My nutritionist set my goal weight, but she put much more emphasis on a target body fat percentage. I had originally wanted to lose 10 pounds more than the goal weight she set so I would be a "normal" BMI, but once I got down to her goal, I realized losing 10 more pounds would make me too skinny. I could already see my ribs! She wanted me at 165 and 25% body fat. I'm now at 158 and 21.4% body fat. Still technically "overweight" on the BMI scale, which is nuts. BMI is meaningless. Go by how you look and how you FEEL. I'm training for a half marathon, am almost "athletic" on the body fat scale, working out every single day, have visible muscles, have bones sticking out all over, and I'm still "overweight"? Ha!

Before surgery I thought if I could get below 200 it would be a miracle. Then after I lost so much in about 6 months, I thought maybe I could make the 150s. Right now I am just trying to keep losing as long as my body wants to, and see where that takes me. If I never lost anymore weight, I am pretty happy with my weight now and my health is so improved, that I already consider surgery a huge success. Still I want to go below 200, as far below as I can possibly go.

Once you start losing after surgery, that is a better time to evaluate your goal.

I haven't talked goals yet with my medical team, just averages lost with sleeve. I set a superficial goal of 185, since that's the lowest weight I remember as an adult. If I get below that, I will be surprised and thrilled.

I want a healthy weight. My surgeon said he'd be happy with me at 140. I'm shooting for 130-135 but we'll see where I end up. He said I'm on track for reaching that in 6-7 months post op.

Until I started losing I could not picture a goal. In fact here is the only goal I have verbalized or typed. Many moons ago I lost weight and the dr said my ideal number was 135. I am 5'5'" and to stay at that weight I literally was not able to eat. I chose 150 just because I felt that sounded comfortable. I try to concentrate on smaller goals, instead of that one.

It feels good to know I don't have to have a set goal weight. All I know now is I just want to be happy and healthy, I figure as long as I can look in the mirror and recognizes the person looking back at me and be happy with her I am good.

My surgeon and NUT wouldn't set a goal, but asked me mine. I think it was their psych eval! Like you I was over 300# when I began and also like you, I set my goal (or rather my idea of success)to get under 200# and maintain. When I got their I set my goal of 158 because it meant losing a nice round 150.

I feel like goals are important but I had this history of hitting some magical number and then quitting my "diet" only to regain. I think that I have found some rational balance...that arbitrary number is a marker - I stay under it! It's an accountability thing but I also go back to my "success criteria" is maintaining under 200# and I don't have to think in all or nothing terms. I am not articulating it very well, but my lifetime of dieting gave me alot of baggage and the scale, a goal weight etc is no longer a source of anguish,shame.

Anyway - I like your approach and it worked for me!

I just wanted to be under 200 first. my surgeon never gave me a specific goal pre-op. At my second post-op appointment we discussed weight and I told him I would be happy around 165-170, which I weighed 155-160 most of my life. He said to shoot for 150-155. His reasoning was that people tend to put on 10% post-op, around 18mos-2yrs out, so if I hit 150 and gained 15 I would still be in a good range. For my height 163 is the high weight for a "normal" BMI.

I am also past 50 and the excess skin just doesn't appeal to me at 180, so I can only imagine at 150 what I would look like ;(

Most of my life was spent in sales,,,, goals and objectives, goals and objectives. YOU MUST HAVE A GOAL... we were taught.. Well, with weight control, my goals are... 64 + oz of Water, 80+ grams of Protein, 6000 + steps per day, and enjoy the ride. I have NO end goal in sight anymore. I already am weary of people telling me "You are about to wither up and blow away!" Seriously? I'm 5'10" and 202 lbs. Not hardly blow away numbers. So, this is an inside job, not an outside beauty contest. For the first time in 25 years I am actually healthy and feeling good both physically and mentally. I don't want to mess that up. So far, the simple 64/80/6000 is good enough. Wherever I land, I will be grateful for this new opportunity at a good life.

when they asked me this I said 160 - because honestly I could not even imagine getting lower than that. to get below 200 will be - well, I will be in tears, I know. When I married my hubs 19 years ago I was 180.

To be a perfectly normal weight - to loose all my pregnancy weight before the oldest turns 30 in two years I would need to get to 130. Honestly, anything less than 160 I will consider a success. 130 would blow me away. but it does seem possible now.

Whatever goal you set, it can be adjusted as you go. :-)

Goal weights are so arbitrary in my opinion. I mean, your surgeon probably has a goal weight that he would like to see you at, but until you start losing you don't really know what is realistic. I set my goal weight too high, not realizing how quickly the weight would fall off and I adjusted it down from there. It also helped me to set little goals as I went, like losing the first 25 or 50 or getting under 200 or whatever. The little goals help to keep you motivated to meet the larger goals. :-) Good luck!

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

        I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.
