The second most painful experience of my life..omg...this was bad

  • Popular Post

I woke up about 2am with a bit of pain in lower left ab area. I took some maalox and tried to get back to sleep. By 4 am I was vomiting and the pain was radiating around my back and across the whole abdominal area. I had it in my mind I was food poisoned because I took a chance on Chinese food that I normally won't eat. But I ate about 530pm and woke at 2 am so that seemed strange.

By 5 am, in one of the lulls in the pain spasms I woke my son up to take me to the emergency room. I had another bad spasm and couldn't get dressed, so we left about 45 minutes later.

By the time we get there, I can barely walk and continuously dry heaving. They get me in pretty fast - the pain med made me high, but didn't touch the pain. The zophram reduced the naseau. By the time I got back from the ct scan I was in screaming pain, dry heaving again and the shift had changed. New nurse guessed my diagnosis and switched me to a strong anti inflammatory pain med and treated the vomiting symptom.. I felt better within about 10 minutes! Thank God. My pain was like a 9 if unmedicated childbirth is like a 12 (on a scale of 1-10). Really I felt as though I might die, or worse yet that I wouldn't and have to suffer so.

So anyhoo..you guessed it, really big kidney stone, way up high. Follow up with urologist since they don't think this baby will pass unassisted. Great.

Current problem is that an NSAID is needed but not good for us. Called my lovely bariatric practice and have a plan of attack on how to protect my tummy for short term use of NSAID.

My luck has not been 100 percent good in 2016 so far....

I am feeling crappy as the happy drugs wore off. I am positive because I now know that this procedure was absolutely necessary as that stone was STUCK. I am uncomfortable and that stent makes me feel like I need to pee constantly and...it will be a couple of "no fun" days but soon I will be better!

Stent should come out Monday.

Thanks everyone for your support. This ordeal has made me wonder how people managed in centuries past without modern medicine...

This stuff isn't for sissies. Check out the warning on the pills taken to numb things. I currently feel like a cross between a) urinary tract infection - that painful urge to go but you can't always and b ) menstrual cramps, that achy feeling with occasional stabbing pain...bloating and feeling like gorging on junk food. And c) maybe some other condition I can't describe - but it's all bad.

So the med stains everything. ..doc says "don't wear your Victoria secrets panties as it will never wash out"

The exit paperwork gave me activity restrictions for the next few days....but you are going to love this: "patient may return to normal sexual activities".

Now if by normal they mean ZERO, yeah, I can see that. If by normal they mean any part of anyone's body getting anywhere close to between the belly button and "fun zone" they are outta their minds. Ha...I Think that was an early April Fools Joke

... I hope this is better very soon. This is one reason I am so glad they said it was stuck and not leaving on its own - this treatment was necessary. If they'd gone in there and it was in the bladder ready to exit I'd probably be a little regretful not waiting more.

I hope I make sense, also a little Percaset woozy.

Which med is that? If it is just phenzopyridine (or pyridium) and it doesn't work, there is a different one they can give you that will help with the cramps (which is likely your bladder spasming due to the stent) called Urised. I found that Urised really helped me. Also take your pain med and keep Fluid in your bladder to keep stent floating in the bladder.

Unfortunately, it may feel like that until you get it out. :(

Cause I'm sure you're rubbing the med in your eye. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] (I know it's a transfer from finger to lens thing, Internet.)

The situation where the intervention is almost as bad as the illness. Glad you have stent for a short time and not the 2 weeks I've heard about. I'd need Valium if I felt like I had to pee all the time. Sounds exhausting.

Drug is phenazopridine and I think it helps but man it's like a strange orangy/yellowish dye ..gross! I was very amused by the warnings - doc says no pretty lingerie, bottle says to watch out for stained contacts! Paperwork from hospital says no gym or heavy lifting for a few days...but sex "as normal" is fine. I think it is a mistake, but a funny one.

He warned me there'd be a few days discomfort. The plan is to remove stent ASAP as that is irritating but I know some people need longer...so we shall see.

The important thing is right now, no additional ones are forming, and this bad boy wasn't leaving on it's own, so doing this as a plannee thing was good.

Doc said that it's rare, but sometimes the stone retreats back up to the kidney, really blocks things and the impacted kidney can essentially die in several weeks. They are keen to make sure the stones are"accounted" for.

Now it's difficult to get anything to test though because it was pulverized.

The actual surgical experience was top notch though - I plan to extend compliments because it makes such a difference in keeping my anxiety way down... another topic, but since my anxiety is reduced, I am better!

Once again, a very educational thread.

I knew nothing about kidney stones prior to all this.

Thanks to CJ and others who've thrown down here.

@@CowgirlJane - Yes it is a lovely color. It is the same as AZO which you can buy over the counter for urinary tract infections. The other I recommended is a lovely shade of blue and if you remember from your childhood, the color that blue and yellow make when mixed together? Yep, it is a lovely shade of green which is quite appropriate for you I think given you had the procedure on St. Patty's Day!

Hope this day was better as you adjust and that you will survive the weekend with it. Well I know you will. You are tough!!

Stent is out - what a relief. I saw it - way longer than I thought it would be, no wonder I hurt! I sure hope this ordeal is finally OVER,

Don't know yet the cause of my particular kidney stone, but the primary advice is to drink lemon Water (or lemonade, orange juice) to reduce risk of reoccurance of one particular type. He also said to be sure I have 2 liters of water a day - I am pretty sure I do, but I decided to fill a pitcher with sliced up lemons and 2 liters of water and do that for a few days to really check that I am getting enough water. I don't like the taste of water any more, so tend to drink various flavoried things, Vitamin waters etc. so this is going to be a change for me. I don't want to take up drinking lemonade or orange juice due to the sugars though.

Vitamin water makes a lemonaide. It's the only one of their flavors that I like. I can't drink it though because it's too much acid for me. I should. I just got the report on my ultra sound. I have 2 kidney stones in my right kidney and one in my left. They aren't moving though and hope they never do. If they do, heaven help me.

Jane, I'm glad it's behind you!

  • 3 weeks later...

My goodness, what a journey! I hope I never get them. Because of all these posts I am upping my daily fluid intake. I don't think I make the two litre mark. I am amazed that you tried to work while passing these things. You are one strong lady. Hope you have had no complications after.
